major problem

ok so i have a big problem.

well not totally me but still involves me because im the one stuck with trying to fix it.

so my bro has an 05 ss/sc with about 40000 miles and the last few days its been acting really weird. stuttering, ticking, sounding like something big was up. i figured it was a mix between the timing chain ticking or maybe sticking valves casued by an oil change needed. well seems i was totally off. his supercharged belt (aka the main drive belt) is completely fucked. its like a 7-8 rib i think wide and all but 1/4 is completely blown off. looks like someone took a knief and a shot gun and went to town on it. so im sitting here like WTF. im not sure i have heard of any one going through a belt on a basically stock car. all hes done to it was injen intake and a B&M. hes not a hard driver and isnt really into speed that much since he got it. i wish i could get some picutres of it to show you all what the hell is going on but im lost. why would a 3 year old belt just shred like that? would his powertrain cover this? i called the dealer he bought it from and they said they would call me back about it. ther is no way in hell that i would recommend any one but a dealer to drive it casue i think its that close to breaking.

so i guess what im asking is any one have a problem like this? any one have a spare stock SS/SC belt i can get thats in good condition? ***** weak

well, that probably means a stone or something got caught in the belt, that's my guess.

lol im in st. louis but thats all i could come up with is something drilled it but this is where i wish i had pictures casue one section is like peeling, like almost2 belts were glued back to back and is now coming apart in a section. his pulley is stock and we have never touched it. he was in an accident that required a new front bumper cover and new front left suspension and wheel. but nothing on the right side. WFT gayness. its like a 40 belt from GM (what they told me)

My 06 ss/sc did the same thing at 35,000 miles I lost 3 ribs on the belt, I do have stage 2 but the supercharger puts alot of stress on the belt..Hell it's boosted! no big deal change the belt, they go for 40 dollars and if you have the dealer install add 50.00 more. FYI Do not use belt lube because the belt we use is double sided and will destroy your belt or cause slipping...hope this helps.

Sorry. I thought STL stood for Seattle. I thought weather, humidity, atmosphere etc might have something to do with it. Seeing as how its a rubber belt, salt, humidity, temperature could have an impact on it, and if it were to start to crack or split in a small spot, I can see it starting to fray and eventually have a section of the belt snap making it look exploded like you described.

There it is. They may have had the engine out, or at least moved it. If they don't put the belt on just right, it will shred. After some warranty work I had, the belt was moved by accident and when I popped the hood when I picked it up, there was rubber flying everywhere. The tech just said nothing and drove it backwards like a maniac back into the shop, and I got it back a week later (SC parts in Canada = like finding a French/American couple)
