Major Problem!!!

Hello all, and this may sound completely crazy to you but it has happened!!!

I know this is an SS forum, but I have a 2006 Cobalt LS and my friend has a 2005 Cobalt LT. Well your probably wondering what is this major problem is, so let me get to it.

Last night it was my turn to drive, so I went to go get gas paid and I come out with my lights
on EVEN THOUGH I had my keys in my hand. I get in my car, and my friend had his KEYS in my car and he could turn my battery on and everything he could even get my car in neutral.

And tonight I decided to get him back, so I went in his car and my keys could TURN HIS CAR ON!!!

I don't know what to tell you guys but I would highly suggest that you guys check if other cobalt keys can do something to your car!

What I don't get is that our cobalts are diferent years and this happened. And I can easily steal his car and practically probably any other cobalt in my neighboorhood.

We're goin to GM tomorrow so if you hear a major recall I'm sorry

BTW: I can't open his doors or trunk with my key, but it's still scary

GM uses the same ignitions in most of their cars/trucks. I've heard of this being a problem in Chevy vans. But he couldn't START your car, could he?

Could you actually start the car and drive it though? The key pattern might be the same, but the chip codes shouldn't be.

Hmmmm. I think that's just coinsidense(sp?) Like i said GM uses very similar ignitions, and has around 200-250 key combos, so i think you two having the same is just bad luck.

Go find an 80's jeep. You can steal those without a key, even the early 90's jeeps too.

I know, but isn't it a little unsetteling that all I would have to do is pick the lock on your door, use my key, and drive away with your brand spankin brand new car?

gm doesnt make a new key and ignition plus locks for each car. thats why your key has a number on it. it coresponds to your locks. allowing you to be able to order a new key if needed. it takes a lot of paperwork though. but the odds of your situation happening are supose to be like non existant though.

get the keyless entry and if the key is used the car wont startup. In fact even if your key is used to unlock the car if locked with the keyless entry button the alarm will go off and you wont be able to turn it off or start the car i know this first hand DOH!

Well, if you ever lose your key, you know what to do.

locks generally only keep out honest people anyway.

That's the truth. If someone REALLY wants to steal your car, they can and will. So it's best to probably not worry about it too much. However, if your car suddenly disappears, you know who to shoot!

Well me and my friend took our cars to the dealer we got our cars from, and they said that they only heard about this one other time. They said that we may have to change the ignition or something.

I guess I forgot to tell you guys that we even got our cars from the same dealer. I mean the odds of this happening are like getting struck by lightening. It's time to play the lottery baby!!

WOW, that is really odd. Not only to have two cars in the same area, but the odds of being sold at the same dealership are microscoptic.
