My Cobalt will not start?!
My Cobalt will not start?!
Hello guys. So I tried to start my Cobalt tonight, and got nothing. I assumed it was the battery and since I just got my car a few weeks ago, I decided to call for the Chevy roadside assistence. When they got here they tried a quick jump and ALL of my lights went on for a second inside my car. Moments later the Theft Deterrent light started to flash inside and now I can do nothing with the car. I never received any type of keyless remote, so there is NO WAY possible for me to disarm anything. So I have no idea how it armed itself in the first place. So now it looks like I might have to call in the morning and go from there. Any advice or anyone else have this happen to them as well. Oh well, thanks for your time.
Hello Snobird. Well the thing is, when I bought the car they offered me an alarm and at the time I passed on it. I thought I would get it down the line but I know it was going to be extra. So when I received the keys they were just standard keys with no buttons on it at all. So to answer your question, if the car has an alarm on it I was unaware of it. I figured without any buttons on my keys, then that meant no alarm on the car. Thanks for taking the time to respond Snobird
I was not aware of that^
Let me go outside and give it another shot. See, when I got the first jump all of the lights went on inside, and it appeared it was going to start. Then the anti-theft light started to flash. So Vamp you are 100% correct, this is why I believe it was activated. Because of the voltage change when he tried to jump it. I will be back. Let me give it another shot

damn, no luck. Anti-Theft light is still flickering and it has been about an hour now. Without anytype of keyless remote button, it looks like I am screwed. I guess I have to call in the morning. Thanks again for the comments.
This is very weird I've never heard of this before...
Try unhooking the battery for awhile see if that will reset whatever is causing this. And this is gonna sound wierd... but is your car in park? (auto only, but duh... lol

ok mookie your key has a chip in it first go to your car and lock an unlock your car about ten times in a row and if that dosent work try the pssenger side door and manually unlock it from inside i know this sounds funny but it fixes alot of the passkey problems
and the second fix Set the ignition key switch to accessory - the electronics are ON in the
car, then remove the negative terminal from the car battery for a few
minutes. Then, turn the to OFF, hook up the battery and you're done
both these fix all the passkey problems most of the time

Thanks Vamp for the help. Yeah, I did try to unhook it for about 45 minutes but still nothing. I have a manual transmission, but thanks again for the suggestion dude. I might call it a night and try it again in the morning. If anything, I will call the dealership. Thanks again for the willingness to offer some help. You guys are the best. I will post an update tomorrow
Ok, Vamp and Snobird. Thanks again for all of your help. I am going to give the suggestions a shot right now. I might be out there for a while, so I apoligize in advance if I dont give an update soon. If you dont here from me tonight...THANK YOU AGAIN for your tips and advice. Like I said, I am going out there right now so this is why I might be gone for a while. Thanks guys, I will keep you updated. If not tonight then I will post in the morning. Good night and thank you.
Have you had any new keys made recently? Your problem is in the anti-theft system if there is a problem. Your key sends a coded password to a module when you insert it into the ignition, if the password is incorrect it will cause a no-start problem like the one you have. If you have a new key made it has to be programed to the car before it will work. If you have not had any new keys made you have a problem with you passlock system and it will require service from a dealer. Hope this sheds light on your problem. Also if you have a different key give it a try first. We have replaced many passlock sensors for problems like you are having.
You may also try the 30 min. relearn procedure and see if it will start afterwards it is as follows:
Use this procedure after replacing any of the following components:
• The vehicle keys
• The TDM
• The ECM
Important:
• This procedure is not available on vehicles equipped with export or Canadian configured TDMs.
• When performing the 30-minute relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the TDM memory. Additional keys may be learned after performing the relearn procedure.
• When replacing a TDM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, ensure the procedure to setup a new TDM is performed prior to the 30-Minute Relearn Procedure.
1-With a master vehicle key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2-Observe the security indicator. After approximately 10 minutes, the telltale will turn OFF.
3-Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds.
Repeat steps 1-3 two more times for a total of 3 cycles or 30 minutes.
Important: The vehicle learns the key transponder information and/or passwords on the ignition switch transition from OFF to RUN. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle.
You can preform this procedure even though you have not replaced any components or keys, many times this will reset the theft system and allow it to start. If it does start it will most likely happen again at some point so have it checked if you have'nt already.

Ok, first of all thank you very much FastChevy4u. I actually had to be at work early this morning, therefore, I had to catch the bus to work and have not had a chance to give the suggestions a shot. I tried some of the suggested ones last night but I did not seem to have any luck. Again, thanks so much for the advice and suggestions. So once I get off work which is in about an hour, I will try the suggested advice FastChevy4u. I called the dealership and since they will be closed tomorrow, the earliest I can bring it in is Wed. I can't wait to get home and give the latest suggestion a try. Thank you again.
Mookie75,
What year model is your cobalt? as it makes a difference in the procedure for relearning the passlock system. This is the procedure for a 2005 model. The first step should be-- attempt to start the car and let the key stay in the on position and just turn the switch to the on position in the 2nd and 3rd steps. After the third step turn the switch off and then start the vehicle. Both procedures take 30 min. 10 min each step. The 2006 is as listed above in the first set of instuctions. The 2005 does not use a transponder key and the 2006 model does. Good Luck lets us know if it works for you.

Hello again. Well FastChevy4u it is a 2006, and I did in fact try out the suggested advice but the problem seems to still be there. I can't say thanks enough though for the thorough and well informed advice. I am positive what you suggested works, however, there must be something else wrong with my Cobalt because I still could not get it to start. With that said, I had no choice but to call the dealership where I bought it from. And since there is a holiday tomorrow, the only thing that could be done was a tow to the shop, and a wait and see. They told me the earliest they could look at it is Wed. It is still under waranty, so everything should be fine as far as taking care of the problem. Thank you again to everyones willingness to help. You guys are great
Sorry it did not work for you. You must have a hard theft code set and not a history code. Many times a bad passlock sensor will not see the correct key when it is inserted even though it is correct. Your dealer will get it fixed and all will be well again. Don't forget to ask your dealer for a loaner or rental if they did not offer it. Good Luck to you and have a Happy 4th.
i just sold an ss non sc that did the same thing...this happened one day after he picked it up...the tech is going to replace the BCM he has found a bunch of codes and thinks this may be the problem...we had a couple impalas and cavaliers...its an overnight fix if they dont have the parts and under your warranty you are entitled to a rental if the vehicle is broke down overnight or a 4 hour job...
