Need Help

Okay, so this isn't about a Cobalt, but rather a Celica. I was hoping some of you would have some experience with these issues with cars in general. First, the car has a GT-S motor in it, but doesn't have the 6 speed that is supposed to go with it, but rather the 5 speed from the regular GT. My friend who has this says it redlines at like 9k. He also said that it is running higher RPM's than what he thinks should be (like about 4,500 at 80 mph.)
But the real issue is he was going to do a 60 mph roll against me and when he shifted downward and got on it he hit the gas and I think he might have down shifted again, but whatever happened, he threw a black plume of smoke out of his tailpipe almost twice the size of his car. I told him I'd ask around to see if I could figure anything out. Any thoughts?

Toyota C56
5-Speed Manual Transmission for FWD cars.

Gear ratios for this transmission:

1st-3.166
2nd-1.904
3rd-1.392
4th-1.031
5th-0.815
Reverse-3.250
Final-4.312

RPM 5th Gear
3900 80

The final drive gear ratio is pretty low, as is the 5th gear ratio. I calculated the speed at 80 as 3900 RPM but that is based on the tire size being the stock 195/60 R15 tires. If he is running different sized tires this could be slightly higher or lower.

Black smoke on accelleration is normal, this is the car running rich due to being in Power enrichment. The giant black plume you described may just be the car running extremely rich.

Well I'm not sure, just throwing out some guesses.

Typically, black smoke = carbon (fuel), blueish smoke = oil, and white smoke = water or antifreeze.

If the big puff of smoke was really black then it was probably a huge amount of fuel burning. If it isn't puffing black smoke all the time, and only when he goes WOT, then I would still stick to my guess that it is running too rich. There could be something going on causing it to dump too much fuel... injectors going static or something, but as I don't know too much about how the Celica computer does fuel adders it is just a guess.

Agreed with mjmur. Sounds like standard PE. Some cars just dump more fuel than others.
