Need Help to pass Inspection
Need Help to pass Inspection
I have a 2005 ss/sc with no cat, and do not intend on putting one on, how can I pass my NYS emissions? I have HP Tuners, but have no idea what to do to get the car to pass, and its over due....
take it to a private shop, pay extra, and they may pass you, if they're shady. if they're a legit shop, you're out of your money, and you fail. i don't know how it is in ny, but in nj you'll get in alot of trouble if you don't have a cat.
is it throwing a code? if not, and they dont visibly inspect the underside of your car, then you should pass. But dont let it stay overdue, or they will send a hefty fine your way. (at least in NC they do)
Its just not worth the trouble of going catless...

How can you PASS? put a damn cat on it
They do inspect exhausts for no cats.
They do inspect exhausts for no cats.

$2,500 dollar fine, I think you loose your license for 3 or 6 mths, and that's just for the 1st offense. That's just here in Nova Scotia, which came into effect april 1st this year. All our emmission laws are modeled after california laws. Can't even have a "free flowing" muffler. If a broom handle can go up the muffler without hitting any baffles you fail. When I went for my last safety inspection, I saw the mechanic doing that to my car, looked like my car was getting an anial probe.
Not going to work in NY . There is a NYS computer in every shop that does inspections . They use a bar scanner to scan the registration on the windshield , then they plug the states PC into your car to check all the emmission related systems . I was wondering how many NY people kept their stock DP's , cause they are going to need a cat to pass.
it should be throwing a p0420 code. go into hpt and delete this code and you'll pass when they plug it up. i wouldn't worry about them looking under your car. go to a shop with some kids workin at it and they wont care. slip them a 20 and ur good.
if they do what they are supposed to, then they have to look under the car to make sure that you do in fact have both a muffler and a cat on your car.
NOw.. you could take a cat, gut it out, and disable the code in HPTuners, and it would look like you have one, because you do, but they would never find out its empty. Problem SOLVED

They look under the car to make sure it's there...I actually have a cat. Hence if you want to go catless just gouge out the cat. But that's just in PA. It's pretty loose in every state except CA; most don't use sniffers.

for the second time, my family owns the shop, i work there, and all my techs know i dont have a cat, that isnt the problem, the problem is getting the computer to read the flags as set or not, nm...
only CA uses sniffers on OBD 2 vehicles, all other states do visual checks, and OBD2 checks
NO, if you disable the code in HPTuners, it wont show up as a problem in the OBD computer for the state

For PA you can have one readiness test as incomplete and still pass...but if you have a cel you will fail...if your computer has all the dtcs unchecked in hptuners then you will never get a cel.
