I went to the dealer yesterdat to look at a "new" 06 ss supercharged. It has sat on their lot for almost a year and a half. When they were going to bring it around for me to look at it, it wouldn't crank. They tried jumping it and such, but nothing worked.

I noticed all the dash lights would flash and the radio would come on. They originally thought that the "security system had locked them out." Well they put it in this morning and then said they had to order a part and they would have it tomorrow.

After prodding for what they ordered, they stated that it had bad gas and they are draining it and are replacing the catalytic convertor to be safe.

Looking for some opinions on this situation, does this sound even remotely correct? Or are they just grabbing at straws due to something much larger than bad gas? How would the cat factor into this?

The gas could be bad from sitting for a year, they might want to replace the cat just in case they dont want it throwing a code and tou have to bring it back because of a bad cat from sitting, i would inspect it when it returms.

What happens when a car sits on the lot is the "sales staff" is responsible for going out and occasionally starting the car and literally nothing more than that besides selling.

So the chances of it having bad gas are pretty likely

bad gas could be the reason... as long as everything is in working order, i wouldn't be worried. you could always take it to your mechanic to have it inspected, or have a friend that knows what he's doing look it over... if there's any problems it will be under warranty, so i wouldn't worry to omuch about it

Isn't it like for every month a car sits, the gas in the tank loses an octane?

Definately sounds like bad gas to me... I used to work at a marina and the boats we had stored there for the long-term often had problems starting b/c of bad gas in the tank... fill 'er up with some new stuff... good to go.

The only thing that leads me to believe this isn't the case is that it wouldn't turn over whatsoever...
