So here goes, I have a 2005 Chevy Cobalt ss/sc. I bought this car at 3 years old with 36000 miles on it. Five days after I got this car the clutch went out on me and I replaced it with all OEM factory clutch parts at a transmission shop. I didn't replace the flywheel just had it turned. About 3 or 4 months ago my transmission syncronizers started going out in 2nd and reverse. So I took it to the same transmission shop and had them replace the transmission since I had a warranty on it and it still cost me around 700 dollars to do the work because they told me the warranty place wanted to use their transmission and my transmission place didn't want to do that because their place of business wouldn't cover the warranty or something like that.When I replaced the transmission I went and got a dual friction clutch and the flywheel turned for the second time. I had the transmission shop put the same throw out bearing in there because I was told it was okay to put in there. Well lets get down to the question I was wanting to ask, the other day I let my car sit for a couple of days, when I took it out the clutch was slipping or something down there wasn't engaging. It did this through first and second gear. It's not the first time I have encountered this problem, this has done this before but only when I leave it sitting for a day or so and it would only do it through first gear and not second. After I pass through second the car drives fine the rest of the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

 

Big No No
Throw out bearing is leaking fluid on your clutch and causing the slippage.
When you replace the clutch the throw out bearing is used and in unfamiliar territory. The seal will leak.
When i changed my clutch i replaced it.
Always a rule of thumb to change that in any clutch job.
Its also the throw out and slave is a hybrid all in one job so you hit 2 birds with one stone by replacing it.

The GMPP clutch came with one in the kit

 

Thank you, that makes since. If I am to take this back to the transmission shop, should I go ahead and replace the flywheel too? When I got the car back it didn't really feel like a new clutch and I thought this might be because of the flywheel being turned twice.

 

If you let off the clutch real smooth and you feel no kinda shutter or anything your flywheel is good. When the fly wheel gets old it can get warped so the clutch does not engage smooth. but if you dont feel any kinda flutter i would let it ride. If you do decide to replace it. Go with a light weight flywheel.

I agree that you should change the throwout bearing when doing the clutch since you have it apart anyways. On the cobalt SS you MUST replace the throwout bearing anytime the clutch is replaced or it will always leak.

 

I think it should be replaced on any clutch job on any car. Its not worth taking the car back apart for one measly part.

 

The problem has not been fixed yet however I did take it to the guy who sold me the clutch and let him drive it around. It drove fine without any slip. The only way it's going to slip if it has been sitting for a couple of days. I will be taking it up to the transmission place that put it in here within the next week or so. You know the transmission place that has a MR in it. I guess I wish myself good luck with that. lol

 

I hope they dont put brake fluid in the tranny to thankyou for coming back and giving them a hard time.

 

I would burn that shop to the ground.
