Odd Occurrence
Odd Occurrence
I had an interesting problem today and would like to know if anyone else has encountered this problem.
I was driving home from work today, hit a bump, and suddenly all the gages on my engine cluster went dead for about 2 seconds, then came back up. I drove it home with no problems but the check light with the lock was on. I pulled in the driveway and turned the car off. I restarted the car, and the light went off. Took it for a little drive, no problems.
I just thought it was weird, never had the gages go dead on me like that before. I’m thinking it may be a bad ground or power source. Not sure.
Anyone else have this problem?

Update: Car went to dealership. They drove it and did nothing. They said, "we could not reenact your problem, thus we will not take anything apart to look at it"
Well, while driving home from work today, it happened again. All gages suddenly go dead, dummy lights go off and on, and then everything just turns back on. Any ideas on what I should do?

So I told him id send my next speeding ticket to GM looking for payment, with a note stating you wouldnt fix my car. So he took the dash apart, and sure enough, the plug wasn't plugged in all the way.
this **** happened to me the other day when i was gonig to lunch it was close to 100 that day so i dont know if it was the heat or not but the gauges started flickering like when you start your car then they just went dead no info or mph and rpm.when i got out work that day it was fine all the way home and no problems today.the car only has 1300 mi.

Maybe it'll give them a clue as to what's going on...maybe.

funny that any time there is a light like that the ECU is supposed to record it... they should have checked the codes.
well, i was driving around and messing around with it. I noticed whenever the engine jacks a lot (crappy stock mounts) that all my gages would go off and on. I looked around and ensured that all the connectors under the hood were tight. Went out again and beat on it for a while and couldnt get it to reoccur. I hope the problem is fixed. I will keep you all updated if it comes back. (crosses fingers)
I had a problem with the dash also. Where i would start my car up and the fuel gauge would say empty and the car started beeping and telling me i had low fuel when i had just filled it up a day or so ago. So I would turn the car off, turn it back on and it would be fine. Its happened about 5 or 6 times and i havent even had the car for 2 months. So I took it to the dealer and the headservice man came out and started my car up and turned it off about 10 times trying to get it to do it, but of course it didnt, but the whole time i was like dont treat my baby like that. lol. I definately think there are still bugs with these Cobalts. Good luck with ur problem.

I've had nearly the same problem, I was accelerating and it was like my car hit a wall, all the gauges went off, and I had NO power. I was revving the car, but the rpm gauge never moved and it was revving VERY VERY sluggishly. And sounded horrible. So I pulled over. I restarted my car and the gauges began working again, so I pull into traffic and begin to accelerate and NOTHING!!! The car wouldn't go over like 35mph and 3000 RPMS. I pulled into a side road and attempted to accel. and NOTHING still. So I killed the car and called the dealership. They can't see it until Wed. of next week and being that I'm 20 WON"T Give me a rental which I think is bullshit. So I restart my car and attempt to take off and I have NO PROBLEMS AT ALL. The crazy ass noise the exhaust was making, the sluggishness, no gauges were all gone. It ran fine and did all the way home. IDK I'm taking it in wed. morning for them to look at. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks guys. BTW it's a '05 I bought it used, it has 18,500 miles on it. It's got me stumped, kinda acted like my families 2000 malibu that had a melted/clogged cat. But the GM guy said they've had NO problems with the cats on the cobalts. Thanks guys!

Hey Scoot! Yeah man, I've had the problem off and on for 2 months, and it appears they finally fixed it! My gages would just randomly go dead and my dummy lights would go crazy. Here was my problem... after weeks of testing and waiting. They ended up pulling the entire interior out of my car and inspected the wiriing harnass. Turns out that inside the dash panel, behind the radio, there is a support bracket. My wiring harnass was rubbing/chafting on the support bracket, and wore through the insulation on 4 power. The 4 wires that were shorting out on my car were, dash/cluster power, power steering, abs, and lighting. The ended up fixing all the damages wiring, and insulated them. Then then tied the harnass away from the support bracket to prevent it from reoccuring.
Hope this helps ya out, mine went into the dealership 4 times for the problem before it was fianlly fixed.
Thanks man, I'll deff. tell the dealership to check that out! On a friend of mine's SS, his entire gauge cluster went out. He said his acted up for a while before, but didn't have the power loss I had, where the car's power was cut down drastically! IDK I've been driving it all weekend over 400 miles and no problems.
