You sir, are a disgrace.

OP congrats on getting out cheap, do your own oil changes!
I was curious why it cost that much and why the OP didn't want to or couldn't do it himself. And why are you an ass assuming I went to school in Pennsylvania.

My friend in Canada works for Nissan and he said he's seen mechanics use impact guns to tighten oil drain plugs. That's how some of these places do those 15 minute oil changes...you've probably saved 5 minutes just by using a gun to take the plug off and put it back on. Derp.

I never understood why people put oil filters and drain plugs in so freaking tight. You are going to have to change it eventually. I had a oil filter that was put on so tight by the previous owner, I had to literally beat a flat screw driver through it, and two hand twist it off. Snug is all it needs.

My service adviser said he thinks they used a impact gun to tighten it. He said it looked like it had been cracked for a while based on the oxidation on the part of the drain plug. Could be why when I gave it a slight push nothing happened, and then a stonger push, and it snapped off. I mean if it was weakened already, it wouldn't take a whole lot to snap it.

Some people think tighter is better. Not always the case

I deal with the same thing at work. I'm an Aviation Mechanic and I have to pull out all sorts of bolts and screws that someone else put in with all they had and then some. If I could have used the tools i have at work on my car I wouldn't have had to take to it to the shop.

All it has to do is be tight enough not to leak. on cars with actual oil filters not like the balt, I hand tighten them. What I have learned is generally with oil filters, the heat will actually make them tighten more with time. Oil drain plug snug, oil filter hand tight. Start the car up, check for leaks, boom, done and I know next time I can get it off.

Yeah you literally can torque an oil drain plug with 1 finger using a small hand ratchet. If you do strip threads a 1 time use rubber temp plug can be put it for like 1$. Just have to buy a new rubber plug every change.

I have stripped an aluminum pan before but covered the fix out of my paycheck I felt so bad. My 3rd job in life and this was right after highschool, once you learn the few tricks oil changes are easy peasy and decent money for a kid outta high school. Also got commission for every additional item sold too.

Oh yeah watch the guy doing your oil change cause my partner would skip steps if the customer wasn't watching. Far and few people will give you what you paid for. Don't feel bad for watching/talking to the guy you should have some confidence in the chap doing your cars blood work.

there are specific torque values for most structural bolts, but they really are lower then you would think they are.... the screws that hold on exterior skin panels to the aircraft are put in at 6 inch pounds....
