Oil Filter Cap Stuck

I can NOT get my $#% oil filter cap off. I've tried and the 32mm socket keeps slipping. I've tried it hot and cold, and even went so far as to hit it with the impact wrench real quick. I have used channel locks in the past, so that may have contributed to rounding. So any ideas? I'm thinking vice grips to get it off and then replace the cap.

I haven't drained the oil yet because I've had issues in the past so I wanted to get the cap off first.

the best thing is to invest in an oil filter cap socket. its a special shallow socket thats 3/8 drive and will easliy fit under the manifold, makes the job a lot nicer. however, if you have damaged the cap with channel locks, feel free to throw the impact gun on it to get the thing off. regardless, replace the cap at this time.

always make sure to put some oil on the o-ring, itll stock the cap from sticking.

At this point I'd pierce it with a screwdriver, from like the top, sideways and tap it off and then just get a new filter with cap. Then invest in a socket. I got one off eBay cheap.

How tight did you torque that thing on there? It shouldn't be on tight enough to cause it to round off.

I have had the damn socket for the last few oil changes, and it still won't come off. I tried vice grips as tight as I could get them and still no joy. It's not reverse threaded is it?

no its just like any other screw device. but the o-ring seal does tend to really seal it in there. just got to really force it off. i've never had one that i couldn't get off and i've done alot of them. but sounds like the top of it has rounded a bit. so your gonna have to do anything you can to get it off. try putting a groove in the side, take a screw driver and hammer it around. and then replace the cap.

ask someone who is mechanically inclined to help you. i guarantee someone who works on cars for a living will know exactly how to improvise in that situation.

Exactly as I mentioned. Slightly pierce the top of it with a screwdriver, sort of sideways and use the screwdriver to tap cap out.

Thanks for using the search function.... I mean it. =)

Some methods to get the oil filter cap off.... Channel locks, tapered punch and a hammer, Breaking it into a million pieces.

Just to let you know, the cap is available with a new filter from the dealership for about $15. That'll save you some trouble the next time you try to change your oil.

do what I did on a friend's car who did his own oil changes, he really cranked it down. he called me after he stripped the top real good, and was adamant about reusing it if I could get it off. So, step one, heat 31mm socket (they do make them, barring that a 1 1/4 shallow IMPACT socket (they are shaped a little different) heat socket up with a propane torch on the end of your extension until your confident it's hot enough to burn you in an instant (have water handy too). carefully maneuver and place socket directly over the head of the cap. firmly seat it without going too far, itll be smoky, douse in water immediately after this, allow to cool completely if you feel it's necessary, now remove cap.

The SS requires the gm spec (think it's 4718 but can't remember if that's it), Mobil decided to pay to have their name on the fill cap. Looks like their investment worked on you. Later ones just say dexos. Since his sn says 2.2L then he prob doesn't have an SS. SuperTech oil and filters are actually quite good and would be just fine in a daily driver. No need to hate.
