If that were completely true then GM would not have that meter in our cars. What about the other companies talking about no oil changes for the first 100K miles?? Occassional oil checking and using the oil life meter is what general maintenance procedures call for with these cars. I cannot see GM spending any money on a product that has no use what so ever such as the oil meter, if it were to not have a purpose. Damn I am tired, that last comment confused even me..lol..Anywayz..I trust GM, as I have always, and I will follow what GM calls for. Just think, this meter is from the conveyor line...If you were to change your oil when YOU wanted to and something happened to your car, who do you think GM would blame??? How could you justify changing the oil differently then what the owners manual and the meter call for??? Can you say, WARRANTY VOIDED??? To each their own, and I choose to follow the oil life meter. I'm not the only one, and the others that do the same have WAY more miles then I. (In grand total) By the way, I used your...Your oil will be dirty comment...Sounded like something you would read in a fortune cookie...lol

Yeah I noticed, I talk to like that sometimes, I think its funny.

I am pretty sure your owners manual says before 6 months or something along those lines. I really doubt it says to do exactly as the Oil Life Meter says. Like you said though, to each his own. I was just making a friendly suggestion on a supercharged driven hard car not to wait 8,000 miles to change the oil.

actually, the manual says that your oil could last for over one year based on your driving habits... if the meter doesn't reach 0 within a year, change it at least once a year...

You don't have those kind of habits, fanatik.

BMW gives you all regular maintenance free for the first 4 years of the vehicle. Guess how often they change the oil on your BMW.....Roughly every 7500 miles (they also have an oil meter, and the dealer goes by that).

i doubt anyone on this site has those driving habits, and i wouldn't go a year without changing my oil... but they're saying it's possible, i guess if you're 90 years old and never drive the damn thing

For what it's worth, owners manual says to go by the OLM, but also not to go longer than a year without changing, for those that don't drive much, as D4 said. Oil will gradually break down over time, whether the car is driven or not. I check my oil every other tank, and as long as it's not low or really dirty, I change it based on the OLM.

My last change went almost 9000 miles, and oil was still fairly clean, even with the CAI on there, and it wasn't a drop low. And I live in dusty Phoenix. If that doesn't say something about the advances in oil and filtering technology in the past 30 years, I don't know what does.

agreed... i change mine around 7500 usually, and it looks pretty clean still compared to older cars that i did around 3,000

I'm not paying attention to the meter anymore. I hit 50% at 7k. I checked my oil, it was below the minimum and very dirty, and it caused the CEL to come on. I added a quart and it was fine then.

I do all highway miles too.

But if you don't check it, you'll blow your engine looking at that meter.

hmmm all this arguing about when to change it.

who ******* cares....the guys who change it early, and often, will do so because thats their way. they will know for sure that they are giving their engine nice clean oil, and often.

The guys who run it to the OLM will do so, because thats what the book tells them to do.

once again I state " no one ever hurt their car by giving it a fresh oil change"

My car has +14,000 mi on it. Did the fist one back in mid July of '06 and the meter shows 45%. Just changed the filter out with a new one and plan to take it down to 40% and then change. Now I will say the filter I took out was pretty dark.

You guys crack me up. The meter doesn't tell you the quantity of oil remaining; that's what the dipstick is for. Check it often!
