P0480- Rad fan on all the time
P0480- Rad fan on all the time
Anyone throw a P0480 here yet? I had that, among 7 other codes, and the rad fan is now on all the time when the car is on, which makes sense given the code. The only problem is the dealer can't seem to figure out how to fix it. They just cleared the codes and gave it back to me. They tried to charge me $115 labor saying that this way they wouldn't have to tell GM about my intake.
I told them to eat me and they can tell GM all they want about my intake since it has nothing to do with the problem.

Ok so he got no reply but I'm having the same code. My fan is on all the time as long as the key is on. They car doesn't even have to be running. I have no other codes, I've attempted to change the relay, but it does the same thing with the new one. I can't seem to figure it out. And the 3 GM service techs I've talked to can't either, they just wanna run a diagnostic on my car and I'm too worried about them ******* up my tune. Plus I don't wanna pay all that money for the dealership to do it. I'm pretty handy with fixing ****, so if I could just figure out what's causing this, I can fix it myself. All my temps are normal and it's not having any adverse effects on my car. I'm beat!
Didn't notice it till I killed the car and the fan stayed on for about 2 mins after I got out. The next time I got in it was throwing the CEL. It depends on how long I've been driving as to how long they stay on after I get out.
The fan comes on instantly with the key no matter what the temp of the car is. I replaced the thermostat about 5 months ago so I don't think it's bad. Also I don't see any temp changes to signify the thermostat. I'm confused!
The code is for the cooling fan relay 1 control circuit which means the low speed. If you already replaced the relay (hopefully the right one, you do have 3), you may have a short to ground. The bad news is that the fan 1 circuit is contolled through a solid state driver internal to the PCM. Your PCM may be shorted.
You will need do do some pin-outs on the PCM connector for that circuit. And test for short to ground on the entire cooling fan 1 circuit. Shoot me a PM with your e-mail and I can send you the diag for it. Hopefully you can understand schematics and how to test electrical systems.
i know this thread is old but....
Where is the relay for the fan? My fan runs from the time I start my car until I turn it off (it doesnt stay on when the key is in or when the car is off like guy above). My temps are all good too, Im pretty sure its just the relay....

Alright I know I didnt get answer but...
I replaced the fan relay- only 1 though bc thats all they had in stock at the dealer I went to. And the fan still runs constantly so I went back and had them run the tech2 on it and I ended up the same code these 2 guys had- P0480. So what should I do? Replace both of them and see what happens or did anyone come up with a solution?
OH yea, there is not 3, there are 2 relays...

Oh yeah, there are 3 relays for the cooling fans. Cool fan 1 relay, cool fan 2 relay, and cool fan s/p relay. They all have to do with the cooling fan circuit. The last one controls the 3rd speed that only the SC cars have. The P0480 has to do with the cooling fan control internal to the PCM. If you are getting this code and all of your relays are working, you either have a wiring problem (i.e. short to +/- or open) or you have a bad circuit in the PCM. Most likely the PCM.
