Please Help! Salvage car repair my dad and I just started

Hey everyone. Thanks for viewing my post. Please feel free to leave any suggestions or comments, but only leave them if you know what you are talking about...I only ask this, because I have NO idea what I'm doing. I love cars but have never owned one, except for now. My dad works for GM so is very helpful, but we could use your guys' advice. A few days ago i purchased a 2005 cobalt SS Supercharged. SOO NICE! No body damage. The only damage is that the radiator, ac compressor and all that was hit...something had hit up under the front of the car. The car was somehow salvaged and my dad and i had it towed to our house (it starts and drives just didn't want to drive it with a bad radiator in fear the engine would overheat). So, the right radiator support bracket (coming off the engine cradle), the radiator, intercooler, fan assembly, and a/c compressor all need to be replaced. Any suggestions on how to go about doing this, or cheap places we could buy parts? Or possibly, you have a stock intercooler or anything you guys would want to sell?

Thanks for looking and for your time. Your suggestions and comments are appreciated.

Matt

Thanks. Morad is actually stationed out of Cleveland Ohio which is about 20 minutes from me. They don't have any of the stuff I need which sucks, because they're super cheap. Thanks for your reply.

Easy repairs, really. Pull the radiator and bracket out from the bottom. it'd help to pick the car up or remove the front bumper and crash beam.

Do the compressor while you're in there.

I'm not sure how I'd mount an aftermarket heat exchanger. I'm not as savvy as you guys. Does anyone know where I can find an oem or replica oem intercooler for a 2005? That'd be the most simple solution for me. Thanks for your help guys

Find an SS at a wreckers with rear end damage and rape it for parts or go on one of the above mentioned sites and buy everything new. Getting used parts would be your cheapest bet.

Yea, I've been looking for salvage yards near Cleveland Ohio, but none of them have any cobalts. They seem to be a hot car and go pretty quick once they get in. I've found all the parts I've needed and have gotten some low quotes for all the parts; however, I still can't find an intercooler anywhere. I'm looking for a basic oem intercooler or one that is the same size as the stock one. This is just for simplicity when putting it back on the car. I can go through GM, but they steal your money when it comes to parts. Does anyone know where I can find one?

Also, can anyone tell me what the difference is between the 2.0 LSJ Tech and the 2.0 LNF Tech. I'm almost positive mines a 2.0L but I'm not really sure. If someone can help explain to me how to determine what model I have would be appreciated as well

You have a 2.0 LSJ (supercharged). The 2.0 LNF is the 2008+ SS which is turbocharged.

check out this heat exchanger. I dont know any info besides what is in the post but if you are looking to mod it then I would go ahead and get this one
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-0l...08/index2.html

I got an aftermarket radiator for my 05 ss/sc from rockauto for about $115 shipped. It looked exactly like oem and fit just the same.

Thanks stonny9. I can't find any heat exchangers for an ss on rockauto. Do you mind sending me a link for the one you purchased? This would help a lot. Also, it just fit right in there with the stock radiator/A.C Compressor/Fan Assembly without any special mounts or brackets? If so this would be perfect for me. Thanks for your reply

My mistake I failed to read your other post where you said you had everything except the heat exchanger. I bought my radiator from RockAuto but you already have one. But my aftermarket radiator mounted just like OEM and you/I could not tell a difference. I just looked on Rockauto and could not find the heat exchanger either.

I looked on gmpartsdirect and found the heat exchanger for $278.03 I do not know if it is an oem part. At that price I would just go aftermarket for better cooling and you would still save money aas they are about $150. Listed under Cooling>Radiator components>Aux radiator

If you have everything except the heat exchanger that is between the radiator and a/c condensor you have a few choices.

1. buy new from somewhere. gmpartsdirect
2. find a used one. where??
3. get the one I posted and put it in the oem position.
4. leave out the oem and get aftermarket either used/new and mount it in the normal spot which usually is mounted to the crash bar after drilling holes. You will not have any negative cooling effects by just having an aftermarket one

If it were me I would do one of 2 ways

money to spend get this for $600
https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/2-0l...hanger-225308/

want to save then get a front mount aftermarket one which is every other heat exchanger except the one above. Get a used one off of the forums for a little less $$$

Thanks a lot for the great info stonny9. That really helps a lot. I think I'm going to go with the front mount heat exchanger. You explained everything really well, I appreciate your response.

I agree with stonny9, just go with the front mount and leave the stock HE out of the equation all together.

Suggestions:

Get a dual pass endplate for the IC. With the radiator, condensor and HE out it will make it alot easier to get to the intake manifold to do this. If you plan on doing any additional mods to the car in the future the dual pass helps to keep the charge air much cooler when running smaller pullies. Also, it will be a much bigger pain in the ass to do later on once the car is all put back together.

I would also suggest doing an second reservoir for the IC system (referred to as "option B") to help bleed air out of the system.

rnjmur, is the dual pass endplate the same thing as a heat exchanger? I'm not sure what you are suggesting...Are you saying i should go with an aftermarket front mount intercooler and ALSO put in a dual pass endplate? or is there a front mount intercooler with dual pass endplates? I'm a little confused, because I'm new to cars. Thanks for your suggestions and your help!

get allllll your parts from ZZP Performance. they put 200% into there parts they have. since the stock intercooler is garbage. buy the zzp stage3 heat exchanger, buy a new i/c pump because factory i/c pumps are garbage and take a crap after driving it off the lot lol.

the stock heat exchanger is made by griffin based out of north carolina. it is hands down the most effiecient heat exchanger for our cars besides the race heat excchanger also made by griffin. you WANT the stock heat exchanger. these aftermarket ones posted are garbage bar and plate designs which arent even made for our application. if you want the best go with ottperformance.com griffin heat exchanger (THE best for the lsj) or simply buy a stock one.

you sir are wrong i have the same heat exchanger i posted for my lsj. it works just fine. he doesnt need a 700 race heatexchanger and he already said he cant find a stock one.
so logically zzp s2 or s3 is the smartest choice. and they are around 200.

Haven't been on for a few due to the holiday.

The heat exchanger is the radiator that cools the coolant. The dual pass endplate is part of the actual intercooler, which is part of the intake manifold. If you goto this page: Intercooler End Plate 88958721 - Crate Engine Depot and click the instructions it will explain the process and what it is in more detail.

Okay everyone, thanks for all the great input before. My dad and I have installed the intercooler, radiator, a/c condensor, and new fan assembly. Everything is hooked up and ready to go. However, we can't get the car to start. The car started before we switched out the bad parts for the new ones, and we don't know what it could be. Any suggestions at all??? Thanks again

We need a little more info,

1)does the engine turn over(clutch switch not making,see #3)

2)If not do you hear the starter clicking(battery could be drained, try boosting the battery or charging it)

3)If not is the security light illuminated in the dash(Sometime it needs to be reprogramed due to battery disconnection)
