Possible Clutch Problems

Have any of you had this problem? When you launch your car in 1st gear, it shoots up to redline and then then starts bouncing off the rev limiter, you shift, nothing changes, you shift again, nothing changes and it just keeps bouncing off the rev limiter even though your foot is off the accelerator and you're losing speed.

I've had this problem a couple times and its almost like the clutch won't disengage after I shift into 2nd. I try not to go to red line, but it seems like sometimes it shoots up to redline faster and then this happens....

Anyone know anything about this?

Umm that blows, I've only had the car for 5 weeks. I'm taking it to the track tonight...we'll see. If it happens again there, I'm not going to drive it anymore there and I'm going to take it into the dealer.

when i replaced my clutch, i needed the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel. cost me about 800 in parts. if you need them to install it too, expect another 800 bucks on top of that.

My car doesn't even have 4K on it. Shouldn't that be covered under warrenty?

depends if it's your fault or not. if they think your clutch is shot due to abuse, say bye bye to them fixing it under warranty.

clutch is a wear item hon.
and you wore it.

If you DO somehow get it under warranty. I strongly suggest taking the $1k you saved and investing it in a driving course

What year is your car? I have an 07 cobalt ss/sc, the clutch started slipping at 1100 miles. I brought it back to the dealership where I bought it, they said the clutch is not covered under warranty. So I brought it to another chevy dealership to get a second opinion. They said the clutch should be covered under warranty especially when the car is still new with low miles. They placed my car on a lift and noticed there was oil leaking in between the motor and transmission. They removed the transmission and noticed one of the seals leaking oil on the clutch causing it to slip. My car is currently being repaired, they are going to replace the leaking seal and replace the clutch. If your clutch is still slipping I would bring it back to the dealer and have them look at it. If they won't cover it under warranty get a second opinion from someone else. I did.... it worked for me. It's up to the dealer's descretion to replace the clutch under warranty or not.

your very very lucky.
there was a TSB released about this to GM techs a while back stating that the problem you just described is caused by driver abuse.

It happens to the best of us, u need to let the car catch traction instead of spin as your easing out the clutch in first, once ur rolling, then u can dump it, if ur not in a good roll and shift before rev limit then you'll go into redline and it cuts fuel temporarily.....til u come off redline signifcantly (it used to happen to me all the time) but when I got Stage 2 I was able to shift right at 7k w/o worrying about it.....if it ever happens again let off the gas and let the rpm drop at about 2.5k it'll catch traction, stop spinning and engage/ catch 2nd gear.....lol, this never happens at the track, it seems like its only when ur in the street, at the track ur more focused on making sure u dont spin so when u launch u wait for a good roll then dump it/ punch it.....at least thats what I've always dealt with......

p.s. u'll smell the clutch burnt after that atuff happens to ya, I always ended up taking it easy after that happened (in fear that i would burn the clutch out); ur call though...oh yeah, when I replaced my clutch at work, u'd be sursprised if u saw how much I had left on the clutch disc...the factory clutch can really hold a lot of abuse and whp, so really unless ur pushin around 300 to the wheels, then I'd save my money and put it elsewhere......

I never read that one but yeah if u experience it then you have to be launching the car, which its really not what GM would like to hear when calling in a warranty claim to TAC.....

mine did that 1 time. fried the clutch. i was lucky they semi warrantied it. i bought a spec stage 2+ and the dealer installed it for free. i have no launching problems now other than traction. the stock clutch is junk all there is to it.

Well my husband did some calling around, and found out that its because I pretty much just glazed the clutch over because I drive like a granny in town. Took it to the track last night and didn't have any problems with it slipping....I just had terrible 60' last night....but then again, all of the SS/SCs that were there had terrible 60'. I just need to learn to shift at 4K more often instead of granny shifting in town like I do....but not a single problem last night at the track, so it must not be a big deal.

an0malous: I'm not even going to respond to your first post, other than, **** you.

I might deserve the **** you
but the truth hurts.

At least you accepted that the problem was a driver issue instead of blaming it on the part like everyone else.

sorry for the brutal honesty.

Yes, I agree it was the driver, but not because I don't know how to drive my car, its because I baby my car in town. So the comment on taking a driving course was uncalled for.

Dont Worry about it katie. Its happened to me a few times. Twice on the street and once on the track. Ive noticed it only happens after Ive raced the car a few times before. Were you hard on the car before it did it?

What some people call "baby'ing"
I call "slipping the clutch"

And you can call me sexist all day if you want. but women are known for it.
I mention it to my wife every time she drives.

HickOverLOrd: The only time it has happened is while I'm racing it. But Its only done it like 2 or 3 times so far.

an0malous: I'm not slipping clutch. What I mean by babying the clutch is shifting at like 2500 to save on gas and such. And slipping the clutch is not necessarily bad driving, its just not caring. But since my husband told me about the glazing over thing and that I should shift over 4K all the time, I started doing that Friday all day before I went to the track and I didn't have that problem at all at the track, and I've been trying to shift after 4K all the time now.

I know your not intending to slip the clutch but thats the root cause of the problem
shifting at the lower RPM causes the clutch to slip just a little bit with each shift.
even when you dont mean to
which in the end is what causes the "glazing" issue.
