Power Steering

So i start my car to leave work last night, put it in drive and get "ding ding ding" followed by "power steering" on my info. center. I lost all power steering. I stopped, parked, cut off the car and restarted. It was back, so I pull out of the parking lot and go about a mile, lose all power steering again. I drove it home that way and called my dad (Service Director at Chevy Dealer)... he said he's seen several electric motors go out lately, and was going to check for a bulletin. Either way its warranty, but thats something that sucks when you're driving at almost 2 AM.

Dealer did that to mine somehow while installing underbody neon kit--must have clipped a wire. Drove it 25 miles to a car show the day I picked it up, needless to say, I was pissed. It was insanely hard to steer at slow speeds, and I took it back right after the show to have them fix it.

Yeah, slow speeds suck, especially on big curves. But It'll be fixed thursday. It just sucks that it fails at only 24,000 miles.

What was the part that needed to be replaced?

Mine's been broken for the past 4 months but it's out of warranty so I've just dealt with it. The dealer told me that I needed an entire new steering column, 1100 plus labor....which is why I'm driving w/out power steering. If the whole column doesn't need to be replaced that'd be sweet.

It's out of warranty because I have 57,000 miles on my car. It's not covered under powertrain.
