remove engine from top of 2006 cobalt

I am trying to get an engine out of an auto salvage yard. They have the cars up on blocks, so it is quite easy to get under the car.

They provide a movable 4 post engine host for taking the engine and tranny out from the top

I got the motor mounts disconnected and the tranny bolts taken out. Took off the passenger side motor mount cradle. Was able to pry the engine away from the tranny. However, the engine hits to passenger side engine wall and the torque converter will not clear the tranny. Tried taking some of the tranny bolts off and this got another 1/2 inch or so....but it looks like the torque converter would need another 1+ inch of engine movement to get it out.

What am I doing wrong. I cannot see how the engine can come out of the top, given how much the torque converter needs to move out of the tranny housing

Pull the motor, but leave the transaxle.Disconnect the torque converter from the flywheel (leaving it inside the trans bellhousing) and the engine comes right out. I just did one..

thanks

However, I think I have a problem now

The torque converter came with the engine when I levered the engine from the transaxle. There is now a gap of about 2 inches between engine and transaxle. I had tried to push the engine back to the transaxle, but am afraid they are no longer lined up (all the oil came out of the transaxle when I levered the engine away)

how is the torque converter aligned? Is there a splined shaft that this has to fit over?

When I did my engine swap after blowing the engine. I pulled it out through the top, but I separated the torque converter and flexplate by accessing the bolts through the starter opening. I also had to remove the harmonic balance bolt to clear the passenger wheel well.
