RPM spikes and smoke... help!
Ok so i went to turn my car on like any normal day and when i did, it took a second, stuttered, my rpms spiked above and below a regular idle, and they died down and i was able to get home. During this incident, there was white smoke coming from my exhaust. Now my gas was low ish but not enough to be burning up the reserved to create this smoke. When i got home, my engine shut off in the driveway, but i still had power in the car. When driving in 1st gear it stuttered a few times before continuing to accelerate. i attempted to get my car to my usual spot and i had no control over what the rpms were doing evern when i hit the gas. I have a 2006 cobalt ss with only and intake and muffler. I just had the fuel filter, timing chain and tensioner, thermostat, and a few popped fuses replaced. if anyone knows what this could be, please help. Thanks!

White smoke is cracked head, bad head gasket. Blue smoke is oil. Black smoke is rich. Lack of control of rpm and studdering, vacuum leak. As I have read a bunch, if you have been doing mods to the intake, tighten her down. Other than that...from what you describe, take it to the dealership.

dealer for sure, sounds like a cracked or warped head/blown gasket and vacuum leak

The timing chain tensioner is a simple job. Pull the valve cover off so you can see where the tensioner needs to seat. Then thread the old tensioner out, thread the new one in, tap it with a hammer and replace the valve cover.
