second gear..
Every now and again its tough for me to shift into second gear, and as I pull on the shifter harder to engage the gear, it seems to grind on the way in. Not the gears grinding, more so the linkage...as if it isn't lined up correctly and i have to force it in place.
It's my first manual car, and it doesn't seem right to me. any input would be appreciated.
thanks.

There's no need for that, take that crap somewhere else.
OP- this is very common in the cobalt, even mine does it. It's just a stiff setup on this car. try shifting into 2nd gear a little faster than normal instead of lolligagging between gears. That's the fix on my car anyway...

Have you ever not been an *******? Get out of here, there is no place for people like you here.
In my Ion Redline I had a hard time getting it to shift into second a lot of times. But I got rid of it so I dont know if anything was actually wrong with it.

make it faster try quick shifting n make sure u have the clutch down all the way if u have an upgraded clutch(most are harder to push down than stock)

If it's your first manual car, it's just gear grinding due to timing of the shift being off.
Between the electronic throttle and the big drop in raitos from 1-2, you have to either wait a bit for the revs to come down, wait longer and rev-match correctly, or just pull it in a little more firmly. It shouldn't be "grinding", but there will be some, resistance I guess you can call it. Feels like you are moving stuff in the transmission, because you are. If it feels or sounds like you are crushing rocks, you are doing something wrong or something is broken.

OP, I had the same issue. I don't know how it happened, but I shot my second gear synchro on a WOT 1-2 shift.
Dealer replaced all of the components to go with second gear under warranty.

theres a thread that has similar issues and according to them its a matter of shift linkage adjustment. i tried searching for it but its taking forever to load. I know you put the car in first gear and measure the distance from shifter to dash and if its past i believe 4.75 inches its needs to be adjusted to that but im not 100% positive. Basically whats happening is your hitting the second gear shifter gate so it needs adjusted. Search for the thread. May be your problem and might fix it for you

I appreciate the help..
I was routing wires for an i-pod hookup, and i had the "boot" if you will, (leather piece around the shifter) taken off...and there was an Altoids can stuck in there =D
i obviously took that out...and it seems that was my problem.
(i bought it used...)
Heads up, storing your tin of mints should be done elsewhere.
Someone should tell the previous owner...
thanks again.
