Serious Problem Wiring & Fuses
Serious Problem Wiring & Fuses
Hi,
I was trying to wire up some LED's and ran into some problems. What I did was cut a 12V wire and split it to put my LED connection. Everything lit up and was fine until all of sudden it stopped working and didn't light up anymore. I ALSO CAN'T START MY CAR, I GET A "POWER STEERING" message of my display??
The wire I cut was on the passenger side, pink/white, and it came from the cigarette ligther area to the red compartment below the fuse box.
I'm assuming it is a fuse, but which one? Anyone have an idea?
Please help ....
Gabriel
Never mind, problem solved. It was fuse #25 in the passenger fuse box. TCM/ICM i think.
The LED interior lighting plans are cancelled.

I'm sure that would help. I guess I just chose the wrong 12V wire and blew the fuse. That's why I'm giving up for the time being unless someone were to do a good how to and show exactly which wire would work. I can find several grounds, but I just don't know of a good 12V wire. For me, it was just a guessing game, trial and error.
OK, for starters you cant just go around cutting and splicing just ANY wire you find with power and hooking stuff up to it.......your going to get yourself into a lot of trouble that way......The proper way to hook up any electrical device wheather it be lights or whatnot.....is to use a RELAY......Now i understand that a lot (well most to be honest) of people do not know how to wire a relay or are scared to do so.........Its actually quite simple and there are a lot of how-to's on the internet or this site to show you how to wire them up......When you use a relay you can use an ignition wire or a park light wire or what ever you want really to make the relay "come on".....This draws very little amperage from the circuit and generally does not cause problems......Or you can run a constant power from the battery and put a switch of some sort inline so you have full control of what ever it is you want to turn on.......I dont think i need to go into any more details but this is a good start for some people that are having trouble with wiring......12 volt wiring is the easiest wiring to do because you only have a power and a ground....so dont be scared to experiment and eventually you will be come a master

I guess I'll look into getting a relay. I assume my fuse blew cause the LED's were pulling too much current. The other problem I have is that I never know which wire to split. I guess I'll ask my friend to pull me out some wires (He's a car alarm system installer). I'm sure he can help. He did that for my previous car and the LED's worked great.
I hate installing LED's with a passion.
best 12V wire to use/find is the one going to your cigarette lighter. i cut and spliced that one to wire in fog lights. no problems with blowing fuses except when i plugged in an ac/dc converter to the cigarette adapter...then i blew a fuse because it drew way to much current. but for LED's..that power source should be more than sufficient.
i wrote this how-to for g5-club. you can pick out the essential information from there that should help out

if you guys need help with led's go ahead and pm me. I'm pretty good with lights. I've wired my whole car myself. (I got pics if you wanna check it out). a switched line is best and if anything seems to be wrong withyour lights then you can always turn it off which completely disconnects power to your lights.
Here's a helpful little link
Here's another to calculate the resistor you need to use.
