Shift cable adjustment

Is there a secret on adjusting shift cables? I put a bps shifter on my old setup with 3.82 gears with cable clamp and solid bushings. I adjusted it a couple of times and it shifter well. Over the winter I changed transmissions to a 4.45 setup and have adjusted it several times and just haven't got it quite right. 1-4 and reverse are ok, 5th is the trouble. I'm not so sure that I shouldn't start all over on adjustments. If I stay close to 3rd going up it seems to go in pretty well. The farther I go right, the harder it goes in, to the point it will move slightly forward, towards the motor, and hesitate, before inching forward into gear. Sometimes I think it's engaged, and 2 miles later it will pop out of gear under load, so that tells me it's not going far enough into gear to stay. I don't think the syncro's are bad so that's not the issue. Question I have is using a go pro and rowing gears, is the lower trans linkage shaft supposed to move when going into 5th? Let me know if anyone knows, and if I need to adjust the cables so it doesn't, because I think that's a sign the cables aren't adjusted right. Mine does slightly, initially. I know it moves going into reverse.
Thanks
