Shifter Dead - Roll Pin?
Shifter Dead - Roll Pin?
Hey Guys,
Was doing some spirited driving on the way home from school today. Doing a change from 4th to 5th, and I knew the gear wasn't in. Thought I fucked up, so went back to forth, no feedback. All my gears are dead at this point, so I'm cruising at 65mph on i75.. lol. Just got towed home from this. While I was waiting for the truck, did some googling on here from my phone. None of the gears will basically go into their "gate." Shifter is 100% play and doesn't do anything useful. I read that it's either the linkage or roll pin. People have only had select gears go out with linkages, from what I've read. Is my problem the roll pin?

Probably roll pin but real quick lift out your shift boot and look at the two cable clamps. If you move the shifter and the clamps are lose on the cable you'll see it immediately. the claps will move on the cable, but the cable won't move.
That sucks dude. That happened to me on the track... I missed 3rd, and managed to put it into 2nd, and thought something was screwy, so I tried shifting again, then nothing. Wouldn't go into any gear. Same deal.
Is the roll pin the part that attaches directly to the transmission? The dealer called it a pivot of some sort. Can't remember, but I got lucky and the dealer fixed it under warranty *fewf*. But really! It shouldn't break so easy!

I'm not surprised really. AFAIK this is the first one being changed on it after 153k miles.

I was looking at the write up. Why do you have to take off the tire? It doesn't seem like you would need to do that? Do you pop out the old one by going through there? Seems like you coul just do it all from the top?
None of my stores had a roll pin pusher, and I had to go to 4 stores before I got the roll pin, including a dealership. Got it for free though.
Only problem I have is the new one barely hangs out from the back.
Shifter is as firm as ever though. I would recommend doing this whenever you got free time, because its a whole new world with my shifter now, lol.

Good news is now, if it breaks I know how to fix it! heh. However I think some tranny/motor mounts and shifter bushings are in order so I can prevent crappy shifts from happening all together. heh.
Oh man... That's all it was? Well, it is nice that that piece is there to protect the tranny, but man... such a flimsy piece, no wonder it broke.

If you're doing mounts, I HIGHLY recommend this. Like I said, it firms up the shifter a TON.
That along with a new shifter and tranny oil would probably feel pretty damn good.
FYI, you don't have to take off your tire. I dunno why the write up has you do that.
Yeah, I changed the oil not long ago, but my next upgrade is mounts for sure. Then when I get some more cash I'll get that TWM Shifter kit I think. Looks pretty sweet.
Hey, another question; If you are finding it's starting to get difficult to put it into, say, 1st gear after you've stopped or most of the time, could that be syncros starting to go? I've noticed my car doesn't shift quite as nice as it used to. Like I said, the fluid was changed not long ago.

What's difficult? Is there a lot of resistance?
I used to drive Semi's before and this was a common occurrence with them, but they don't have syncros so it's expected.
It always goes into gear, it just seems there is more resistance lately. While I'm driving it's ok.
I could just be being neurotic and there isn't anything really wrong.
