Hey everyone,
got a 2007 Cobalt SS SC and sometimes when you make a left or right turn it makes a cracking sound I believe it's the u joint but not entirely sure. Anyone know what it could be?

 

That's a really general question.

Can you feel and hear it in the column?

Does it happen while going forward or backward exclusively?

Does it do it under power or will it do it while in neutral?

From what you've said, just off the top of my head, it could be the CV joints, ball joints or inner/outer tie rod ends, steering shaft joints, or even the turn signal lever cam. There's also a chance your steering wheel could be jammed down on the shaft and it's popping against the steering column cover, or the steering column cover could be poorly installed or broken and rubbing against the steering wheel.

 

It could even potentially be an issue with column shaft bearings or a loose column mount.

 

I had a weird clunking housing when moving the wheel left to right and certain bumps at low speeds , was the steering shaft itself. 80 bucks rockauto, came with the grommet for the firewall and everything. Mine is a 08 ss.

 

I did the same. Easiest way to check if it's the steering shaft U-Joint, spray it down heavily with WD-40 and see if the issues go away. Or, if you can see a ton of "red" on it, it's rusted.
