Steering column problem ... never ends?
I got 2009 cobalt, auto. The steering column was making some rattles. I took it into the dealership. They replaced the whole column. 1 month later there was another rattle. They replaced it again. 2 weeks later there was a loud ticking sound as I turned the steering wheel. They ripped the steering column apart and re-adjusted the column internally so that nothing binding etc. NOW the rattle is back.
Anyone know what the actual problem is??? Perhaps a TSB? I wanna be able to tell them EXACTLY what to fix. I have 3 weeks left on my warranty... then I am flipping the bill for any "guess and fix" that happens.
Please help

yea mine was pissing me off this morning on the way to work, the only thing i can think of to help is is to make sure your front rotors are not warped, i.e., replace them
maybe stuff some foam surround on the steeering column?

As for rattle noises, 90% of the time it is the steering column gear lash between the motor and column, if the steering motor was not greased when replaced for the recall or any other reason, then the noise will return. Take it out and check for yellow grease on the motor drive gear. Another common noise is the intermediate steering shaft rattle. A decent gm tech should be able to diagnose these no problem since GM has made a 10 page rattle diagnosis bulletin on this vehicle, if they give it to some apprentice or general mechanic to look at it, well good luck because they probably know nothing about it.
There was a power steering motor recall, most or all of the cobalt PS motors were changed out with a new design one. The new motor comes with a small pack of grease that has to be applied to the motor gear. The new motor has an oil slinger cone on the gear to help keep the grease in its spot.
|The motor is easy to take out and check, 2x12mm bolts.

There are updated sunroof glass mounting screws with a thicker washer, have them installed and you should be fine. Make sure they are the NEW design ones - GM part.

are you sure is the steering column cause i have some noises and turns out i was the steering rack the mechanic said to me that steering rack its one of the worse in the market
i belive he said its koyo who make the rack

The SS rack is generally fine, but the LS cobalt rack is known to become clunky.
With the engine off and the wheels on the ground, shake the steering wheel back and fourth and listen for a clunk - you might need to have someone listen to the rack with a stethescope while you do this. Just an idea. You will likely hear a bad intermediate steering shaft during this process also though. As for part numbers, no cant help you.
