Strange fuel pump/filter issue

The fuel pump on my 07 Cobalt 2.2 has just started to make strange noises. Basically it sounds like the pressure is constantly changing from 1 second to the next, like the pump keeps fighting to supply enough fuel. The problem is intermittent though, sometimes the pump still runs like it should, at a constant (and quiet) pressure. The car drives perfect either way, but something is clearly not right here.

I was just on road trip in some very remote areas up north where I had no choice but to fill up at some questionable looking gas stations, this is where I first heard the pump doing this. I'm thinking I may have just got some dirty gas which has clogged up the filter, giving the pump trouble maintaining a steady flow. If this is the case, a new filter will hopefully do the trick. The filter on there isn't old, but then one contaminated tank is all it takes.

Anyways, just thought I would check in here before I replace the filter again since it's not exactly cheap. Has anyone else had their pump do this before?

Thanks,
Andrew

Well, I just replaced the filter and no luck, still does the same thing intermittently. I was excited at first because it ran for close to a minute sounding perfect. I was 2500 miles from home when I first noticed this problem and it hasn't got any better or worse in all that time. I thought if the pump was on its way out it would have got worse by now, or died altogether. Is there some kind of pre-filter in the tank? Maybe something before the filter is plugged up?

Have you checked the lines or the pump itself?
