Supercharger belt squeaking?

Hey guys, I've got a belt squeaking noise, pretty sure it's from the supercharger belt. It's had a little squeak every year when it gets cold, but its especially bad this year.

I'd heard you can spray belt conditioner on a squeaking belt as a temporary fix for the noise; I tried this this afternoon and the squeak got MUCH WORSE and became a loud squeal.

I took this video this morning when it was cold, because I figured it wouldn't be doing it in the afternoon when it was warmer and therefore wouldn't be able to get help diagnosing the problem:

YouTube - Supercharger belt squeaking

So, like I figured, when I got home in the afternoon with the weather warmer and the engine all warmed up, the belt wasn't really squeaking at all. I'd picked up some belt conditioner and sprayed it on both sides of the belt- and then the damned thing started squealing like a pig.

So guys, A) what the hell is up with belt conditioner? and B) should I get a new belt?

The a/c probably just overpowers the noise

Haha, true that.

Oh hey, I'm pretty sure that was your car parked next to mine in the UH parking garage the other day.

Anyway, has anybody actually tried changing their squeaking belt? Isn't the squeaking a sign it needs attending to?

That squeaking is so freakin' ghetto... that's why I tried the belt conditioner. But gotdamn did it have the exact opposite effect... listen to how horrible this sounds! LOL! *facepalm*

Keep in mind, during this warm afternoon, it wasn't squeaking AT ALL until I put the belt conditioner on...

YouTube - Thanks a lot, belt conditioner!.wmv

Mine also started to make that noise. I put some belt dressing on it and just like yours it made it much worse. I ended up replacing the serpentine belt and now its silent. If it still squeals like a pig then either the tensioner or pulley has to be replaced.

I was having problems with mine, and I noticed it had oil on it. I degreased it and it keeps getting sticky again. Is yours like this, and does anyone know where it could be coming from? I'm kind of worried about it.

The belt might have a slight glaze on it. Get some sand paper and while the engine is running hit the belt with sand paper. This will get rid of the glaze. This is very dangerous you have to use extreme caution. If the squeak comes back the belt is to worn out and you need to replace it.

i have the same squeeling. Only in cold weather, and it use to when it was kinda cold, warm up and go away as weird as that sounds. But I have a new belt and have tried belt dressing. GM dealership told me it was an idler pulley and another near by mechanic said the same. So i'm just switching mine out and seeing if that cures it.

Sound like a bad tensioner,or idler.
I would change the belt and check all the parts the belt rides on for a bad bearing.

If you use a mechanics stethascope
(long screw driver to Your ear for guys with no money)
you could narrow down to where its squeaking.

Dont do this unless your a fool,
Just buy a new belt, you fingers are worth more than the price of one.

If you want to try sanding it ,take the belt off first sand it and put it back.

Hey *******, its not going to work as good with the belt OFF. Why go through the trouble of taking the belt off if your going to do that you mind as well replace the damn belt. The point is to avoid taking it off and see if taking the glaze off fixes the problem which most of the time it does work. If your scared to do that just replace the belt.

They don't seem to last to long but mine has been on and off more often then Paris Hilton's panties [shocking indeed] but they tend to stretch out due to climate changes, multiple removal and reinstallation, and or it might simply be off one rib on one of the pulleys.

It's cheap and easy to install and will help when you can cross it of the list of possible fubar parts. Mine is doing this currently and I bought the zzp adj tensioner but it didn't solve the prob so it was around 50k and I am replacing the belt. Just give it a shot.
