Synthetic Oil question

kinda pains me asking questions about oil since i am pretty adept mechanically, but. I have a brand new Pontiac Pursuit and it is my first NEW car...so first time for me doing an engine break in (had a 88 5.0 mustang before.) will the dino oil have done its job of breaking the engine in by the time it comes to do the first oil change?

my question is will the dealer do a full synthetic oil change for me for the 1st oil change and will it affect the warranty at all?? also when i am buying FULL synthetic oil how do i know its really FULL synthetic as opposed to the oils that call themselves synthetic but are really petroleum and synthetic blends

First oil change should be okay. I swithced mine at the 2nd but may have been paranoid

Any oil going into your engine must meet GM Standard GM6094M. Look for that on the bottle.

Warranty will be fine switching oil.

Mobil 1, Amsoil and Castrol syntec, Castol Syntec blend (semi-synthetic) meet this standard.

I have heard things about Castrol about not quite being a treu synthetic.....but Mobil 1 and Amsoil are.

Oil

Amsoil seems to have the best effect on my Cobalt SS/SC. I have a dealer down the street from my house and it's been running strong.

Ill share the limited knowledge i have on this topic... You guys are correct Mobil 1 is a true synthetic, any other oils are a synthetic "blend" there is a certain percentage a company must have to call it synthetic, When the oil was first released it was so expensive to make so the "other" companies switched to a synthetic blend because there was just really no market for it too much money etc... Mobil OR Chevron Texaco/Havoline (canadian) decided to keep there full blends and found another cheaper way to refine it and sell it, So in short MOBIL 1 and Havoline(only available in canada) MEET GM SPECS for synthetic, I have researched this and have decided that i will be switching my oil to Havoline (not to be confused with Valvoline) due to the fact i can get in 3 dollars cheaper a liter because my good buddy works for Texaco..! Hope this helps any other questions feel free to ask and i will pass the questions on to him for an answer..!!

Sort of off topic, but when is a good and useful time to change the oil on my 2.2? Had since march, and it has 3100 miles? DIC says the oil life is 55% but I hear that its good to change it twice as often?

Any help greatly appreciated..

Is there any advantage to that, or is it just a safe way to go?

I did my first change at 2500 kms and cut the end off the filter just to see and was quite
surprised at the size of aluminum chips trapped in it.
Made me feel better to change it early incase there was more floating around in there and not getting to the filter.

no--just safe. There are some that change it much earlier on the first but to me thats old school thinking. If you really had to change it very early---GM would say so

Mobil 1 is excellent and since it's actually printed on the oil cap of the SS/SC models, you can't go wrong. IMHO, Amsoil is the absolute best on the market, however you are only splitting hairs at that point because they are both so superior to most other oils. I will say that the only down side to running Amsoil is that the independent dealers (jobbers as they are called) can be hard to find depending on where you live. Also, Amsoil (Hastings) filters are one of the best on the market if you are also debating on which filter brand to go with. Again, this is just from experience and views expressed in this post are opinion only, and we all know the old saying about opinions! Good Luck.

no, with all the detergents and additives in oil these days most times you can go 6000-7500 miles before changing your oil. thats with mostly highway miles tho. if youre in alot of start n stop or you hotrod it 3000-3500 is still safer. i used to "change" it every 3000 miles but after i realized it needed it and finally got to changin it it would be closer to 4.

Here's a link for an Amsoil vs Mobil 1 test. A real test too, not something paid for by Amsoil on their websites.

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/s.../oil-life.html

Take a look at what starts happening to Amsoil at the 12k mark.

Bottom line. Both are very good oils. One claims really long change intervals. This test proves that's not safe to do.

If that's the case, you need to revise your thinking. Engine oil with a thousand miles protects better than brand new oil. Hard to believe but it's been proven with oil analysis samples of wear particles.

anytime you take your new car into the dealer they put synthetic in it for warranty purposes. Synthetic is always the better way to go because it takes longer to break down in your motor. The only time I would not recommend using it is on older cars. Synthetic tends to find leaks in seals and such much easier than ur regular petrolium oil
