Thermostat mixing valve failure
Thermostat mixing valve failure
I just had an interesting thing break. I've been driving in the Zero degree weather here in Chicago lately and noticed that my heater really just isn't very hot. So I stopped in at the dealer today and talked to my guy Steve who knew what it was right away. He said they just did one of these last week.
The mixing valve that combines the cold air with hot air from the heater core was broken stuck. Apparently there is an issue where if you have your thermostat at any medium setting on a cold soaked car, and then turn it to full hot while it's still cold soaked, the actuator can break trying to move the valve.
So what does that mean? 3 days out of service. They have to remove the entire dash assembly to get to the valve. What a pain! We checked, and currently there is no TSB concerning the issue. But it is apparently common.
