timing 2.4

okay doing the timing on a LE5 2.4. I have a chiltons manual with me, it says to line up the crank shaft at the 5 o'clock position and the INT sprocket to the 2 0'clock position.

okay problem is the chain has about 3 links of play in it. Is that normal? Secondly when i get everything lined up i have to move the slack out of the INT sprocket to even get the exhaust sprocket on. it says nowhere in the chiltons about moving the INT sprocket, just the EXH sprocket to line it up.

please help guys, thanks

I have a 2.0, but the timing is practically the same, you will have a little slack between the crank and intake sprocket until you put the chain guides in and the tensioner, but you should only have to turn the exhaust cam clockwise a little bit to line up the sprocket. It sounds like your turning the Intake cam counter-clockwise from the front of the engine, instead you should be turning the Exhaust cam clockwise with a 15/16's wrench.

Hope this helps.

yes correct, but not sure why i have so much slack between the INT sprocket and crankshaft. Without moving the INT counter-clockwise, i can't even get the EXH sprocket on. i have put it together once and it just missed badly. so obviously moving the INT around is whats causing it.
