Tired of this Noise...Need Help
Hello I have a 2005 Cobalt, I have this problem and I cannot afford to bring it to the shop and hope that one of you can help me.
When I put the car in reverse, start backing up, and with my wheels turned I hear this terrible scraping type squeaking and it's really annoying and I cannot pinpoint the source. It's coming from the front end and sounds like the driver side.
Can someone here please tell me what this could be and how itcould be fixed? I thought it to be the brakes but when I put new pads and rotors on it didn't go away.
This only happenes in reverse, with the wheels turned either direction, and with the car moving backwards.
Thank you.

Try backing up with the brakes applied slightly and see of the noise disappears.
I think it is just the pads rubbing slightly.
Mine does it in the morning when its damp because the rotors rust up .

No I think it's something to do with the steering. It only makes the noise when turning the wheel. If it was the bearing it would make the noise going forward too.
That thing with pressing the brakes lightly was the first thing done and that doesn't work.

well, ty. My brakes squeal alot when i reverse so thats where i would guess, but i suppose we may have ruled that one out. Uhm, brakes pads completly wore and the grinder is scraping againts the rotor?
I still think it is just the pad to rotor clearance thats your problem and we all have the same thing and it is in the design of the calipers and master cylinder to only allow the pads to open so far.
Prove me wrong and let me know for future reference.

Not true, I had a neon that had the bearings go, when they first started going, they would only make noise when I was going uphill and turning to the right., never in reverse, and only in that situation, until they got to the point that they ground if the car was moving.
4 times...I repeat 4 times I have brought my 05 in for the rattle and it still...still has not been fixed. The first 2 times it was a bad cat according to them. I ripped part of my heatshield off because I was so pissed and the next 2 times it was because part of the heatshield was missing lol. All heatshields are being torn off this weekend and we'll see if that fixes the problem. At least my AC is fixed now- the damn controls in the car were bad so they had to replace the entire unit. What the hell.
I just realized I posted this in the wrong thread...I am so pissed I can't even concentrate.
