SS/SC comes WITH a Getrag tranny, standard. I'm having tranny/synchro problems as well. I use my car, but I don't abuse it. From the sound of it, this could be a lubrication problem.

Are you sure about that dude? I've always read the SS has a different trans(FGP35), than the base cobalts...from saab... your trans even uses a different fluid. also, from "Malaclypse "

"That and from what SI is telling me, -ALL- 5 speed Cobalts are getting the Getrag 287 instead of the SS/sc having a different trans (F23) entirely."

Heres the link to that thread... https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...L+transmission

Apparantly the SS tranny's been having problems since their not gonna use it anymore from 06 on?.

EDIT: looks like the F23 is just a different model of a Getrag, My bad... learn somthin new every day...

Anybody that has ever owned an SVT Focus with a Getrag tranny will tell you to run as far away from one as you can. I went through 3 trannys in 1yr. With NUMEROUS Clutch problems as well..... and No I dont drive like a *******. Tranny problems with Getrags in those cars are well documented.

Ive never had any bucking.... but EVERY and I mean EVERY time i try to go into reverse... if I do not first put it in 4th or 5th gear .... It will grind. Ive also had problems when its cold shifting into 2nd and 3rd gear while just casually driving down the road. One thing that i guess is diff from some people is that my clutch is REALLY grabby when its cold... it actually gets kind of annoying because I have to change how I drive in the morning and it messes me up. I stall it all the time.

The transaxle used in the SS/SC IS NOT a Getrag
F23 is a Getrag 5-spd used in the base Cobalts and Saturn ION (as well as the now extinct J-bodies)

F35 is used in the SS/SC and Saturn Redline and is a Saab/FGP sourced transaxle first used in the 2000 and up Saturn L series then in 2003 in the turbocharged Saab 9-3.

When I shift into reverse, i have to go to 1st then reverse or else it grinds, and i took it in 3-4 times already and they've done absolutely nothing, first they said they couldn't duplicate the problem, then they said it's my driving style, then they said that that is perfectly normal, and now they said that if it gets worse to bring it in again, this is making me nuts... all i want is a normally functioning car....
p.s. i have a 05 cobalt ss/sc

Yeah thats just the way the car is some times you can push the clutch in first then it let up slowly and it will go into reverse fine. But theres no fix for that

Why oh why didn't you fight this. They can't prove that it was your fault so you should have stuck to your guns and fought. If you don't mind me asking What dealer did you purchase your from?

wow so it wasnt just me having problems with the tranny. my car bucks and the clutch doesnt grab in the cold. i thought it was just the cold weather. i hate bringing it to the dealer too because they tell me nothing is wrong with my car. my rotors are not warped they have normal wear, and that black smoke coming out of my exhaust is also normal all the other cobalts on the lot do it. god i could have swore black smoke and groves in my rotors were bad but hey all the cobalts have them. o i have an 05 black ss with 6k on it.

there's problems with every car on the road. you'd get scared about nearly any car on any forums if you look around enough.

Is it normal for it to do that every single time i go into reverse? b/c none of my friends cars do that, and i also tried other cobalts and they don't do that either

I've also blown a Getrag Tranny up. In my Alero. 2nd gear would not work any more, only grind.

i would def recommend taking it to the dealer and explaining. even with a shitload of abuse, a transmission should not be going on a car with only 8 thousand miles. GM doesnt have the right to tell you what you do with your car or to assume you do something like beat on it. ...unless they see you doing it...i dont see how they could justify that...its not like u havent serviced your car...as long as you can provide proof that youve changed your oil *which is all you really need done at this point* they should not have a problem...its the people who dont get their tranny fluid changed for over 60k miles or never do oil changes and then blow their cars up who have no right to complain. i know working for hyundai for a short time that if you dont provide receipts for work they can deny your warrenty claims.

well for me it did it more when i never used to put the car in gear when i parked it. now since i leave it in gear more i have to push down clutch to start and since im taking it out of a gear when i go for reverse it doesn't grind.

Does anybody hear a loud whistle under heavy acceleration? I have an '05 base sedan and have found it to be quite a little beast for stock 4. I've brought it into the dealer at least 10 times so far...everytime i bring it home i find a new grease stain inside and another noise in my engine..but my tech is cool i fucked up a class 2 data bus line (what ever the **** that is) by tapping into the radio wires for power to aftermarket fog lights and he replaced the harness and didnt put it on the RO so im still covered..but he did tell me that the whistle is normal when it gets higher in miles....but none of my friends have the noise on their cobalts....just wondering if i was the only one who feels like they got suckerd into a POS...
