Tranny died on the highway

I was on my way to class today and my tranny died! I have been having problems with my transmission slipping a little bit this last week and it went this morning. The damn thing slipped real hard going into 2nd and then when i went to shift into 3rd it wouldn't go into any gear. So now my car wont move and im in the passing lane on RT38 lol. When the car was stopped i tried to play with the shifter and it just felt like my gear box was messed up, I put it in 1st and the shifter just moves back to neutral. Its at the dealership now, hopefully its just needs a needs clutch, 14,000 miles is a shitty clutch life.

sorry to say but manual tranny's don't "slip" clutches do.... and I have over 19k hard miles on my tranny at over 280 whp almost the whole time, and the clutch has never slipped once. so they don't suck and they will hold up.

It's all good, seen a fellow Cobey owner sittin there I figured I would try an help. Hope they hook ya up. I take mine to Bob Maguire Chevy off 130 right near the 130, 206 split. Theres a Tech there, Chris who is also on here that I talk to. He's damn good and a cool guy too. If you run into troubles, call over there an see if you can explain the problem to him, maybe he can hook ya up.

Lol i meant the clutch slipping not the tranny, i know the clutch should hold up longer, just wanna see why mine went so soon since i really don't beat on it except for at the track

Roll pin I"m guessing too... I know a few of those that went.

And anytime you ever bring your car near a stealership take any aftermarket part off. If you aren't "cool" with the techs, they will most probably void your powertrain warranty because of the mounts.

One of the Techs that work there, I had talked to at one point. He's an older guy, seemed pretty cool. He mentioned haveing a nephew, I believe, with a Redline that they put a clutch in, after puttin the Stg2 in there. He said that our clutches didn't hold up too well after Stg2 lol...Future reference, if you can avoid Lucas, do it..I hope you get taken care of though. Holla at me if you need help man. Hell, I have about 14,400 miles on my 07 an she still rippin out. LOL!

I disagree with your assesment of the stock clutches. The number of yes's in the below poll is way too high.

https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/show...lipping+clutch

Also you repeatedly claim in threads that you don't rag your car, and that your tires had so little tread wear that your dealership accused you of putting new ones on before you brought it in for service. Which is it, hard miles or easy driving?

I have 14,400 miles of hard driving in addition to GM using my car for their Ride and Drive car for it's first 630 miles all on the stock clutch. Every car is different, lets not turn this thread into another..How long did your clutch last, or you suck driving stick, ect.

He's not even sure what is wrong, may not be the clutch.

go to my threads to see the logs I post man...... I don't drive the ever living **** out of my car like most the young kids on here... I"m 28 and know how to treat a car.. I have probably @50 passes down the track, maybe 20 street races, and the car get flogged at least a few times everytime I drive it. It's called experience and knowing how to drive and operate our clutch properly. I know 2 guys that blew their clutches up the first week they had their car, is it GM's fault that they can't drive.. I don't think so, is it their fault that they drove like idiots and didn't break in the clutch properly... yes it is. as stated my car has over 19,000 miles now, and 15000 of those have been highly modified miles and over 270-280 whp. and yes my clutch has never slipped once.
as for the poll... did you poll the average age of drivers? or how many different manual cars they've driven, or how many have owned a car with hydraulic clutchs?
I'm done ranting.... there are plenty of things GM totally Fucked up on this car, but I don't think the clutch itself is the problem.

end rant...

Which is it, hard driving or smooth sailing? You claim both in the same post. And I still don't buy that everyone who's had a clutch problem is an idiot that doesn't know how to drive stick. The clutch is inferior and that's all there is to it. Further more the suggestion that anyone should adjust to a stock clutch is ridiculous. You shouldn't have to shift at certain rpms to prevent slippage, if I wanted to shift belew 3000 then I should be able and not have to worry about it. The poll is what it is, number of clutches that have failed. What ever the age or driving experience of the drivers is irrelavant, the facts remain the clutches failed. And you absolutely right, there are plenty of things that GM fucked up on the Cobalt.

I meant t say I don't kick the **** out of my car every second that I drive it (like some people I've seen on here). But I do get on it hard everytime I take it out. and the majority of clutches I've seen blown up are by either complete and utter noobs that didn't properly break in their clutchs, or people that haven't a clue on how to drive stick.
also remember our stock clutch is actually an exedy stage I clutch, not some usual oem doo doo. which is why exedy doesn't offer a stage I aftermarket clutch for our cars. so technically, yes, you do have to adapt to driving it since it is a performance clutch, technically.

and for the note when driving normally I shift between 2k and 2500 rpm's not 3k. you just gotta let the rpms drop on the 1-2 shift... which is where every one is killing their clutches due to the wide gear spacing.

So when you say you get on it hard but don't kick the **** out of it I assume no power shifting and you're not trying to set a world record for the longest burn out? The way I used to drive my Cobalt and the way I drive my STi, nice and easy on the shifts, but hammer the throttle. Of course at the track the nice easy shifts get replaced with fast shifts, but no power shifting.

exactly.... power shifting with cobalt = clutch death. and burn outs I stay away from... just asking for trouble with these cars.

Well i just got back from the dealership, now they "think" it was something in the tranny itself that broke and not the clutch, but their transmission mechanics called out again so I still got no idea what exactly broke. And to top that off they wont give me a loaner car cuz I'm only 20 and you need to be 21. I don't get that, when a loaner car is part of the Chevy roadside assistance that comes with the new car then how can they not give me one, its not like I'm going to Hertz and trying to rent a car, its supposed to be given to me in this situation! If they could sell me the car when i was 19 then how is a loaner car a big deal now? Uh i hate dealing with car dealerships, hopefully someone decides to come to work tomorrow and figure out whats wrong with the car lol

That sucks man. Did you ask them if your parents could get the rental for you, or if they could use the rental and you use their car?? Just some ideas. Good luck and keep us posted. By the way, it didn't look like it was the clutch, the way your shifter was movin around in gear like that.

Yea i know, the whole gear box felt like jelly, I'm thinking the linkage or something like that

Well just called the dealership. they said that there was something inside the transmission its self that broke and they are gonna have to open it up and replace it. They said the vibrations from my motor/tranny mounts is most likely the cause. They are most likely still gonna fix the car under warranty though which is good, but it wont be done until at least Friday. Looks like im gonna be putting the stock mounts back in once i get my car back

Yea they said GM normally has a problem with after market mounts but my aunt works at the dealership and is always checking up on the car so they are doing me a favor and just fixing it, hopefully this wont cost me a cent

His shifter went into gear with no problems, but would move around in gear like it was in neutral. Was pretty crazy lookin. Linkage issues maybe, who knows, at least it should be gettin fixed for free and not voiding his warranty
