Is it like the usual sound you get from a manual tranny when you back up or is it more like a thump?

No there's no "normal noise" with a manual transmission. Check under your car for something that is loose that is flapping in the wind. That's what it sounds like to me.

He's talking about reverse. Every manual tranny car I've EVER heard has sounded different in reverse than an auto, especially when backing up fast like he's talking about. That's why I asked what it sounded like.

By you saying wheel hop , I assuming you mean a thump noise . Take it to the dealer , cuz thats not normal at all . The only thing you should hear , sometimes is a slight whiney noise , like gear whine and thats it .

Ya every manual I've ever owned had a whine when in reverse. Cobalt no exceptions.

Yeah whine = normal tranny noise in reverse, thump = cause for concern

well the reverse whine is not a constant whine

ie...... supercharger whine

it kinda sounds more like a crushing whine , from a blender and ice

but i would take it in and get it looked at , and while you are there go with another 5spd cobalt , and go for a short test drive and see if it does the same thing
