I change mine every 10000 miles because of the dusty phoenix environment around here. Just check your filter evertime you change your oil(assuming you do it yourself, if not then when you take it in and have it done they will check your air-filter for you).

It's easy to change, just pop the intake box open(there will be several clips around the edges) then just lift the top off and change out the filter.

How easy it is to change or check is very dependant on your model of cobalt.

If it is the SS/SC... I would let the people changing the oil handle it. Lol. Probably the dealership.

Why? You have to remove a wheel to change it or check it!

At least on my SS/SC according to the manual.

Depending on who you talk to here... some say they've changed it without taking the wheel off, other not.

I'm more concerned about how us SS/SC guys are supposed to remove/replace the OIL FILTER... that thing is IN there....

Getting the OFL at teh dealership tonight, so I'm going to ask about how it's done. Once the car is out of warranty... I'm not paying that kinda scratch to have my oil changed.

The first one was free and I saw on that it was $62. Not sure how much dealers really charge but at $62, I may change it myself.

What do dealers normally charge?

Spend $50 and buy a K&N drop in filter... then don't worry about it ever again.

On the SS/SC you don't need to take the wheel off to change the filter. If you take the screws out and the clips you can move the wheel well out of the way enough to get the air filter in and out. It is still a big pain in the ass though.

As for oil filter, it isn't that hard. 32mm socket and a 12 inch extension make it easy. The filter and cap come out underneath the SC (there is JUST enough room). Take the fileter off then put new one on, put it back through from under the SC and screw cap back on. It takes me about 3 minutes tops.

Exactly. I found it easiest to reach in and attach the socket to the filter cap first, then just plug the entension into that and twist. Once you loosen it a turn or two, you can do the rest by hand if it's easier. It's a little awkward at first, but once you do it you'll see it's not so bad.
