Wow... new engine... ummm.. wow.

Alright so some may remember this. I had a rattle that was bugging me for a while. So I took my car into Huffines Chevrolet here in Dallas. They took a look at it and suspected a broken pulley. My thought to this was... well.. ok.

They said they would have to order the parts so the car was safe to drive.

Parts come in. And I take my car in to get fixed as of 05/14. I drive up the next day because they gave me an Aveo rental. (ugh..) And I wanted my car back. They tell me.. well we pulled it apart and a broken bolt was found in the header. (I think alright.) they could drill and re-tap and put a new bolt in but since this is under new car warranty (less than two years old. 22k miles.) they are going to order a new header and get the car fixed but it will be a week. To this news I head back over to the rental car company. Walking in I see a nice car outside. The buick alzeta or something like that. Luxury four door. So I go into the rental place plead my case (dealership still footing the bill.) And they eventually give me the ALzetta after I had offered to settle for a pickup.

So All this week wait I have been cruising in the luxury rental (20 mpg average btw.. sucks.) I'm thinking on taking it in and trading for a smaller car with power everything as that would make me happy. Anyway I give them a call today as I have heard nothing.

Omar my rep tells me that they took the header off and found yet another broken bolt in the engine block itself. They could drill and re-tap... and yadda yadda yadda... Here is where I have a problem. Same excuse but now they are going to order a entire new engine for my car. Another 4-6 business days work needed. Por qua?!

Is that regular? Any service technician guys able to give me a break down on this one? Call huffines and follow up on what is actually going on to give me the skinny? I'm not offended or anything. Hell it is all on GM's dime. But come on.

Thoughts?

i think they are bullshitting you, there is more than just a broken bolt on the header. They wouldn't replace the whole god damn engine for a broken bolt. I could see them replacing the header and the head of the engine. But not the entire engine, thats just ludacris. If I were you I would go down there and have them point out to you what is wrong. Why replace a motor when theres not even anything wrong with it?

if i were you i woudnt be to disappointed, yea youl have to drive the rental for a while longer, but if the dealer is paying for it, whats the harm in getting a brand new engine?

I'm just a little off put by the same problem response as being the reason. It feels like an excuse. Why tell me the same thing different location? I suppose it could all be the same bolt. Maybe I could get an LNF engine. I don't see that happening though.

Ok so I called Omar.. to double check time tables.. and to also find out two broken bolts? Actually it may be more than two. It seems that the bolts on the front of the motor were not properly torqued.. either over or under and this caused multiple broken bolts.

So.. Guys in Ohio.. WTF!? Lol.. I know mistakes happen.. but could you imagine the pain for someone who ignores the rattle until something bad actually happens? And if that happens outside of the warranty time period? (for a 2006 36k miles) At least I know in this case I have the super extended bumper to bumper. But if I didn't.. wow.

Maaaaybe not an LNF, but see if they would be interested in tacking on a Harrop to the LSJ.

If there really IS something wrong with the old one, all the more reason to get the new one.

Yea I'm not going to stress about it. But I am thinking of asking for a free break job and transmission service just for customer satisfaction purposes.

Alright last update for anyone checking in. First a summary.

I noticed a rattle coming from the passenger side of the motor. Sounded like plastic on metal. Car drove ok so I was not worried. Took it on beginning of May.

Omar my service rep at Huffines in Plano says it probably is the belt tensioner. So he gives me a rental. Next day I am told the belt tensioner is on order but the car is safe to drive. And it was.

On the 13'th I take the car in after parts are in and drop the car off. Get a crappy rental. Next day with no status I stop by the dealership. I am informed then that when they pulled the belt tensioner they found a broken bolt in the head. So they would have to order a new head. Would be a week. I swap for a nicer rental and take off.

During this time I am communication with the sales rep that sold me the cobalt in the first place asking about the Cobalt SS/TC Sedan. And asking her to check on my car for me to make sure everything that is covered is fixed under warranty.

Week later I call to check again. This time I am informed that when pulling the head they noticed other broken bolts and damage to the block. They have to order a new engine. Ok fine.. (when I started this thread.) They say it will be another week.

Another week passes I head in and the car is done! (Or so I thought.) And I pick up the car. I notice the switch plates are still scratched to hell and back for the door controls. I let it go drive off not worried about it. Head to the GF's in BFE. When leaving there with no streetlights when I am backing up to turn around I discover that I have no reverse lights.

Next day... (Saturday) I check fuses and light seating, re seating both lights. (I had to do this before when the car thought I had a burnt out break light.) No go.

So Tuesday as I could not on Monday I take the car in again. (June 3rd) And I write a strongly worded e-mail to the sales rep I had been in touch with considering the cobalt SS Sedan. Here it is below.
__________________________________________________ ____________
Susie I don't know if you checked in person on my car or not. But
when I took back the car on Friday. I trusted that all was well as
you and Omar assured me. Only to later find (when I needed them mind
you.) That the reverse lights did not work. Also when I took the car
back in today I asked about the panels near the window controls on the
drivers and passenger side doors if they should scratch up and have
pain problems. Omar said no and ordered those. Also I have had a
boost bleed issue with the car. It is not making the correct 12.5 lbs
of boost as it should. Omar said that they will look into that too.

As of right now I am pretty dissatisfied about the state of repair on
this car after apparently asking people to double check and make sure
everything is as good as it could be. Since I am at work and really
can't call right now please also forward this to Omar.

If the car is not up to standards whenever I receive it back. Meaning
I want people to go over it. Make sure everything that should be in
like new condition still is in like new condition. I will be going to
a regional service manager to address the service issues.

I am not upset that the repairs from my previous trip had to be
extensive. That can and will happen from time to time. I hold no ill
will to GM or Huffines or Omar because of that. I am upset because I
was told on more than one occasion that the function of the car was
fully vetted and everything was as good as it can get.

Currently I will accept no less before I take the car back again.
Please copy this to whomever needs to be copied in relation to my car
service. Texas Plate EDITED AND OMITTED. Currently at the Huffines of Plano
service center. I will be investigating with Consumerist.com for
contacts of GM executives to bring this to there aids attention should
this issue persist.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ^^

So today (06/06) I pick my car up. They had it cleaned/detailed and everything seems to be in good repair. Here is hoping that it stays that way!
