it's best to venture to the RL boards. Some guys already have it installed. I think one of the RL guys actually has his installed and he resides on here. I don't remember who though.

News from ScDyne ...

Here is my questions posted yesterday to Scdyne and the answers I received today !

Questions

1: Is a header for the Cobalt SS/SC is available right now ?
2: If no, when will it be available ?
3: Can you send me by e-mail some dyno graphs ?
4: What price including shipping in Canada ?
5: Is it better also to buy the ScDyne gasket ? At what price ?
6: If I order right now, how many days to receive it ?
7: Do you currently make (or buy for your maker) a good amount of these headers ?
8: Is the bolts or stud fit perfectly with the engine block and the down pipe ?
9: Does the header can be used with the stock downpipe, or since the collector is bigger than the downpipe must be replaced ?

Answers

1. Yes the header is available right now. Our current production run is expected to be back from ceramic coating by the end of the week, ready to be delivered to the public.
2. Available by the end of the month at worst.
3. There is one Dyno on the site now and one more will be posted as soon as we get it online later in the week. It was done by an individual as an independant test.
4. Shipping to Canada is a little more expensive, but I think I'm going to re-evaluate the retail price so it will be around the current $425.00 shipped.
5. I'm probably going to include the gaskets now in the new price. It's copper vs. multi layer steel so it's a toss up.
6. If you order now you will get it around the first week of september. BUT you'll also assure you get one from this batch.
7. At this time we purchase 15 at a time so they go fast, but I'm sticking to that low of a number to keep an eye on production. I have had problems with them from the beginning so until I get a few batches out that all look the same with no come-backs, I'm sticking to low volume production numbers. It puts the supply below the demand for the most part, but I can control quality that way.
8. The stock head studs are used, but smaller nuts (Honda/JET Style) can be used if space between the stud and primary is a problem. They are hand built so there are differences in every one that is impossible to prevent so we provide the hardware to address that. The exhaust side uses bolts and nuts over studs for a better seal.
9. It's a direct bolt on replacement part and fits up to the stock down pipe. If you choose to remove the cat and use a straight pipe of a larger diameter then it's going to make power, but violate emissions laws..

Here is the skinny:
We started with 304 Stainless and the manufacturer had never done 304 stainless in a large volume with headers.
That compounded with the fact that the header design was complex to begin with and I refused to let them use a crush formed collector led to a bit of a stalemate. (1/2 the year to be honest)
Once the first run finally got to the customers the exhaust flange had too small of a surface area to seal 100% of the time. Some people reported leaks at the exhaust gasket others had no problems and, while it was made from machine-finished 304 stainless steel; almost everyone expected it to be shiny. Needless to say no one can discredit the performance gains and it’s been validated both at dyno shops here in the area and others across the country.

So we went back to the manufacturer, made a few necessary changes and ramped up production with the second generation of the header. Also all the current customers have been offered the option to exchange the header they have with the new product for no additional cost. We switched to ceramic-coated mild steel because the manufacturer is experienced with it, it looks good, it performs better than 304 stainless and it costs less to make. (A benefit that is 100% passed on to the customer- See new retail price of $399.00)
We made a few minor changes to the design of both flanges to provide a better overall seal at the exhaust flange and better port location for performance reasons and ease of hardware installation. All and all the product that we are offering now is an overall better product in performance, fit and finish and price point.

Bottom line is that it’s available now; it’s a great product and an exceptional price.

WopOnTour reported seeing a 14 HP increase after installing the header.
Not the reported 20 HP we have seen, but more than 9 HP for sure.
I have not gotten into the details of the dyno so I can't say if the IATs were the same in the runs. Just a few degrees higher and you really lose power in the engine.

I doubt we are going to offer a down pipe any time in the near future. IF we even do it will be to complete a race header as one piece from the engine to the exhaust system.

We tested a few set-ups and didn't see enough gain to justify the removal of the CAT - especially since it's agains the law..

Here is how it works - And I stand by this -
You dyno your car and document both the HP and TQ - Along with that the IAT temp and A/F ratio too.
Then install the header.
Dyno your car again on the SAME dyno with the SAME correction factor and the SAME gear.
If your within 5-10% of the IAT on both runs and as close as possible for the ambient conditions you'll see at least 10 HP gain.

IF you don't and it can't be attributed to a lean condition then call me up (661) 916-7757 and follow theses simple steps:
1. Call me an *******.
2. Ask for a Return Order #.
3. State that it's because the header failed to make the stated power.
--
4. Put the header back in the box along with a photocopy of the pre and post dyno run and send it to me.

Once I get the header back I'll refund you the price of the header and shipping one way.

WopOnTour got 14 HP to the wheels - Someone here in town got 16 HP to the wheels and when we tested it we got 20 HP.
But that was because we were blowing 2 fans at the car to keep the IAT near where it is when you are driving.

To be honest the ONLY tests that have come back less than expected have been those with intakes and WE'RE ALL working on trying to resolve that issue. EVEN if it means we figure out exactlly what is needed to trick the PCM and I send it to every header owner (my cost) I will.

I think a signal clamp or signal conditioner attached to the MAP or MAF will resolve the issues everyone is having and they can be hard coaded to an EEPROM for around $100 a piece.
