cleaning engine
can i spray down my engine with a hose? i assume you cant drive it for a while after... cause i have like this white residue crap on my engine and i dunno why or what it is and it's bothering me so i wanna know if i can take a hose to it and clean with a towel?
Here's what I do.
1. Wait until the engine is fairly cool or do this first thing in the morning.
2. Spray down the engine with regular undiluted Simple Green and use an old sponge if necessary to scrub a bit.
3. Go start the car at this point, and then spray down the engine before the Simple Green dries. Once done rinsing, let the car run for awhile to dry up most of the water. Shut down the car, and wipre the remaining areas with a chamois or towel that you will never use on the cars exterior again.
I have a special smaller wheel/engine Absorber* chamios that I keep for just that job. Works great! This is how my engine looks all the time. I never let it get dirty.

I was skeptical too.
I just washed the car normally, then opened the hood and went at the engine with the same brush and soap that i used for the car, then i rinsed normally like you would the outside of the car.
I didnt mask anything off or cover anything, just cleaned it as-is.
Afterward i started the engine at let it idle til it was dry, then wiped up the water-spots left behind
As long as it's just being rinsed with an open ended garden hose you're good. Don't hit it with high pressure water though. All of the connectors have seals to keep water out but they are only meant to keep out any road water that may splash up. If you get a bunch of water in your connectors you'll be sorry.
that was back in the 80s or if you have a shortram
Ecotecs have been tested from 200 degrees to ice block dumped on them.... Use black magic engine cleaner or if your paranoid keep the engine running while u wash it.

If you have a sprayer with multiple settings, put it on mist. You have to hold it right up close to rinse everything, but it uses a minimal amount of water and nowhere near enough pressure to do any harm to your electricals.

Wow, I guess a heads up to anyone thinking of buying a car from Saturn of Regina, I worked there for a few months last summer and was taught to spray de-greaser on the engine and everything under the hood and then use the pressure washer to rinse it all off.
