So I've searched and searched and searched on here about the best way to wash out your engine bay and every thread I've come across has too many contradicting opinions on how to do it. I have an 06 SS/SC which recently had a small engine problem resulting in about a quart or so of oil being blown out of my dipstick tube covering my whole bay. It's been parked since waiting for a new motor and I want to clean out all that oil and crap from the bay. Many people say simple green which I plan on using. But my concern is does anything need covered?? Half the people say yes and half the people say nothing needs covered. So if I do not cover anything will I be ok?

Use a degreaser then hose it of. Cover alternator and fusbox area just to be safe.

I would also cover your intake filter, just to be save. You can just wrap a plastic bag around it.

I used degreaser and a rag. With so many electronics, I just play it safe.

So far what they've ^ said is all correct. I just detailed 2 engine bays (Cobalt and Grand National) Heres what I did: for the painted areas and plastics I mixed water with Simple Green concentrate (because it's safe and not flammable). Sprayed it on a cloth and wiped down every inch I could get to. As for the oil, Gunk Engine Degreaser should do the trick, follow the directions on the can and cover all electronics in the area (i went extra safe and wrapped any wires or harnesses in plastic wrap). Rinse with water and spray down with air from compressor hose if you can. Just a warning, upon starting the car, you may have some smoke/vapors from the engine...it's either water or leftover degreaser...let it burn off or blow it out with the compressor again. Good luck
