ok, winter is slowly destroying my wheels.

polished aluminum wheels, no clear coat. salt/sand/grim is stuck on/into the wheels.

so far the only thing i have found to even touch it is steel wool. this also kills the finish, which requires a two step polish to bring it back.


anyone have a better idea of how to get this crap off my wheels?

I don't know if they do what the painted ones do but mine chip really bad from the cinders. I actually had them replaced under warranty and they started again at the beginning of winter. I took them off and got 4 steels with snow tires for the winter. I would recommend investing in some if you can get yours back to looking new to save yourself the hassle. Plus snow tires kick ass in the snow.

 

Try that NevrDul **** from an autoparts store, it worked on my old polished wheels!

take a piece of 40 grit sand paper. thats what the lips feel like.

Exactly. I bet its the cinders raping yours. I know they killed mine. Pissed me off, I wanted to get my new ones off before winter and just didn't get my steelies in time. Tirerack - 199.XX shipped for 4 16" steelies. 2 winterforce 215-60-16 70ish a piece, free rears almost brand new. Can't beat it. Oh yeah, forgot the toyota camery hubcaps that I popped the toyota emblem off lol.

Clay bars do work good. I would wash the **** out of them then try the bar and see how they look. I can't see the polished ones chipping like the painted ones did so you should be ok about that.

I hope they arn't as bad as you are making them out to be.... When I got my new ones they offered to give me the polished ones for free and I almost took it. Maybe after seeing these pics I will be glad I didn't.

 

maybe you should way them when you do get them clean so you dont have to worry about it

i thought maybe the whole polished lip would have given that away.

Home depot get a Ryobi Loose cloth wheel & 1 sewn cloth wheel it comes with the arbor for the drill or you can buy it! Then use some Zoops Metal Polish that you get from eastwood.com! It will make short work of it & repolish it at the same time!

 

clay bar will fix that up just fine..... are your wheels as bad for brake dust as mine? (big lip) brake dust sticks to the damn lip so bad! also...... u shouldnt run custom wheels during the winter. salt will eat them alive!

Have you tried billet alum polish on a powerball? That usually works very well. I dont think that clay is going to do much in this case.
Once you do get them cleaned up, I would definitely suggest a coat of wheel sealant to help protect them.
