1976 Corvette fix up thread

bought this 76 stingray pretty cheap on craigslist, gunna fix up and drive for a while i guess maybe trade off or flip.
paid 4400. its a 4spd or i wouldn't' be interested. also L82 so better of the two engines but still pretty gutless smog motor... 220hp and 275tq i think. i haven't' looked up any of the other options. oh and the wheels are horrible ...enkie... maybe they are worth something? dunno thinking about corvette rallies
i didn't take any interior pics but its missing a couple little pieces here and there but its pretty nice. seats are good etc... black interior
fixed a few things, lights were stuck up, when i got in car there was hissing from under dash... duh was just a broken vacuum line. its really hard to shift into 3rd the shifter hits the console. just needs linkage adjusted... haven't done it yet. radiator leaks, tried stop leak didn't work so i bought a aluminum radiator off ebay. car didn't run right and wouldn't' start cold without spray. the primary accelerator pump arm was frozen from sitting so i just gave it a few taps and it broke loose and works fine. tach doesnt work but it looks like the wire is fucked up so probably an easy fix
there is some fiberglass damage on the rear bumper i'm going to try and fix and paint, we'll see how it ends up but i think it'll be fine. not a show car.

had to drive 6hrs to get car

engine is ugly

first pass of rubbing compound

first pass of rubbing compound

used some rust prevention flat black paint all over engine bay

first pass of rubbing compound

radiator leaking where there was no rubber. made some out of some rubber track

radiator leaking where there was no rubber. made some out of some rubber track

whoever had car before ripped apart the shroud to get it out without removing the water pump pulley

trimmed it up to not look so ugly

painted with cheap paint

painted with cheap paint

Nice - It is a pain to pull the engine out of that car with a cherry picker engine hoist. The engine sits so far back you have to extend the hoist all the way out. Plus the rubber nose doesn't like the hoist sitting against it, so it is best to pull it and the radiator prior to attempting to grab the engine.

im not gunna pull the engine, just take as much off as easy and paint it while in the bay.

its not perfect but once you put everything back on what you can see will look good.

plus its a driver.

it just looked really shitty cause it sat for a while

Clean car, with it being mostly original looking, I would also agree with the 15" rally wheels. The C3's have really come up in value. Obviously the 68-72s are the most sought after, but I would check out the corvette forum. Lots of builds and info on that site.

Have you thought about doing the big and little look? My dad is going to do that on his 69 Camaro.

How great is the handling on a c3 vette tho? The rally wheels are a good looking wheel, and they made a ton of them.

What are you going to run? 275/50/60s? Or 295? 295 is what I ran for my back street tires on my Foxbodies. 295/50/15 Kumhos. They were great tires. My son sent me this one this morning.

i'm just going to leave it how it is, the tires on it are pretty new. i don't have any plans to put new tires on, the car is going to be a cruiser, it won't be fast. the wheels are just horrible

i'd have to check but the tires on it look like 245s maybe 255s

I always hated the C4 wheels. The Zr1 wheels looked good, as far as wiring goes. All old GMs are terrible. I rewired my 67 Camaro front to back. It was a lot easier than trying to trace things down. My dads 69 camaro is just as bad. The wires are brittle and as old as your car is, I am sure it is the same way.

Wiring is a tad expensive, but as long as the brakes work, your fuel pump, and filter are good, the carb is working correctly, and your wiring is solid you can kill an old GM. Corvettes are just known for electrical issues. That is just how they are. What carb are you running on it? Was the factory low compression motor rebuilt? When they went smog in the 70s it killed the performance. Its hard to believe they choked the 350 down from 330 hp to isn't it 225 in 76? We always found our best deals on parts at swap meets. Those have almost gone away. My dad has a 454 in his garage that he is supposed to drop in his 69, he bought a muncie, but as it just sits and has for years, he is now talking LS swap for drivability. I never thought I would hear those words come out of his mouth. He is such a purist.

I like Holley carbs. They are easy to work on, and reliable.

I can't get the rear tail lights working or rear markers, front markers don't work either.

Headlights work and dash lights work brake lights work. The switch doesn't work right but I hot wired the taillights jumping the 12v to the taillight wire on the plug. Still nothing

No power to socket in rear, ground by antenna is old but looks is connected. I tried to ground socket on exhaust but still didn't work.

I bought a new switch in the meantime

Haven't tried backup lights

i got the lights working, after fishing around behind the dash a previous owner added a relay, i'm guessing the old trick to give more power to the lights to make them brighter.

well the power wire to the relay was disconnected from the battery, after connecting it.... most of the lights worked.

all the marker lights work, taillights work, brake lights worked, until you have the taillights on then passenger side brake light did not work. they put a different socket in that one, and the metal was messed up inside and not making good contact, i bent the metal around for it to make better contact and it works.

i ordered a new socket.

when new light switch is added i think the lights will be good to go. its nice to see all the marker lights work, license plate light too
