The real problem with the Balt
1.) FWD
2.) FWD
3.) FWD
4.) No real aftermarket support
Can anyone here name me a Cobalt that is out of the 11's or even in the low 11's?
How much if it exisit did it cost to do that?
Anyone?
Non sponsered by GM or Hahn or a company with big money? (maybe not Gm right now
)
I'm leaving the scene.
I've come to realize that the Balt is not a vehicle meant for fast times.
It started off with promise but it's flaws stem from FWD design mixed with bad choices in parts and flaws in design.
The FWD is the killer followed by the choice of the F35 tranny designed for towing vehicles.
Axels were a mistake.
Non forged Pistons but Forged rods was a stupid move.
Choices in intake cooling was **** poor.
Headers, Exhaust piping route and other integral parts were just wrongly choosen in an effort to turn a family car into a sport coupe. It gets the job done for market approach but for actual performance and moddiblity it lacks in many huge ways.
Performance parts are scarce as no one makes parts for the Balt except a few speciality companies and some of them are under scrutiny from the Cobalt republic for various reasons. Because of this getting the car to 400 means forking 4k to a speciality company or spending more to try to do it your self. And even then your still not out of the 12's unless your a good driver. (which seems there aren't many here)
I'm not just talking out my ass either.
You name it I've done it to the Balt.
Tuning, Slicks, Methanol Injection, Cooling mods, Pulley swaps, Stage Axels, Headers, Downpipes, Exhaust, ST Shifters, Hell I've put nitrous on the car something I said I'd never do. The car will fly and is a match for the majority of the racers here minus a few.
But its nothing impressive in the big scale and is more a hassle then anything.
So I'm going to stop with the Balt and move on to a real project.
A 90 Camaro.
V8 means 4 more cylinders of power.
Parts are easily available.
It's the right design (RWD)
And in the end I'll be happier going faster and doing the things FWD can't.
So thanks for the laughs guys and the fun we had. I'll still be around lurking.
Also,
I'm still the fastest Central Fl Balt.

My car is more than capable of 11's, just didn't get the chance this season since I was tuning the suspension and my last track day got rained out. The car went 12.8x @116.90 without even trying. Baby'd the car out of the hole and granny shifted 1-4.'
I will agree that FWD sucks, I ******* hate it and will probably end up swapping to something RWD in the near future, but don't get on a car that's more than capable withoug exploring all possibilities. Just becuase a bunch of 17 years slap on pulley's and run 15's doesn't mean the car is slow, just means people suck at driving lol.
needless statement that you read and took time to responded to. so i guess your reply was needless also.
non-n00bs? id rather be a n00b on cobaltss.net than a daily visitor that has nothing to do in there life but make posts on here. 8000+ posts=no life for you non-n00b.

*****, just make your own ****. (j/k, but god I hate these threads) I did, I have no sponsor, no shop, and no experience (previously) with a 4 banger or turbo's and look how well my car turned out. 440 whp 400 wtq stock motor and trans. I pretty much built this thing in my driveway, I don't even have a garage.

To make a V8 go fast cost x amount and to make a Cobalt go the same speed cost xx amount. Espically with todays economy it's hard to justify spending xx to make your car go fast. This is a secondary reason why I'm going to a new platform. I've always been a RWD guy and I've had my fun in the Balt doing the FWD thing but it's time to go the next step you know?
Torque steer use to mean the car shifted hard and went sideways instead of FWD where it just "pulls the car to the right a bit". RWD is living dangerous. Tires cut lose in a RWD and you go sideways. Have to be a good driver to keep the car paved to the road. FWD the tires just spin and you look like and idiot going down the 1/4 mile.
I hope the best for you and I'll be looking to see that 11 sec run.
Best of luck.

was that towards me or him?
If you were looking for a drag strip car then what were you expecting from the cobalt which is designed with more auto-x in mind?
Cobalt dominates KONI Challenge

""If you were to look at the current top standings in the Street Tuner Series, you’d wonder why the other teams even bother showing up. The Chevy Cobalt teams have been dominating this year with the new Turbo Cobalt SS."
This article doesn't even mention the same success they had with the SS/SC as well. Take your car to a road track and get more out of it. IMO

Yeah I bought the car as a daily driver orginally and never had plans to build it.
Then time went on and you get the itch.
Like I said I've done the RWD thing but wanted to try the FWD thing and see how it goes.
I have and now I can say I've tried all car platforms minus AWD.
Auto X is fun but not my thing. Not to say I haven't tried it..ummm not in a offical course and thats all I'll say. I use to rally race (different car but was FWD to but soooo underpowered) and sliding around on dirt is by far better to me than Auto X.
But running the 1/4 is where I get my most kicks.
To each there own right?

yea, damn GM for making an economy car instead of a baby GTO. I am sure they sat down and just forgot to make this cheap car something other than a civic/corolla/sentra competitor than a racing machine.
