Base model cobalts

So I been researching about coilovers for base models. Why can't you go lower than ss models.

What are you trying to do, go lower then a stock ss or go lower then a lowered ss? All cobalts have the geometry.

You can't go lower because they have the ground effects kit?

Lets say you put the same coilovers on a ss on the same setting as a base model cobalt. Would it be the same ride height and will gap? Bc I read they wouldn't be. I don't understand why it wouldn't.

You can get the same ride height with either car. The SS may appear lower because of the body kit. Wheels and tires play a big role too. There's a base model in NY, forget his name, but on 15's his car was almost on the ground.

Okay good to hear. I was about to be pissed. Too much money to boost the 2.2 and now can't lower it the same as an ss. But glad to here. Guess I need to find a junk yard to find ss body parts

I think you run into problems with your axles more commonly on a slammed base, but as for height- they should be the same.

Not sure about 'more' problems with axles in the base, but they both will eventually have problems. Best thing to do is get Powell's rotated mount, assuming your car is manual. That will reduce the risk of axle bind somewhat.

I'm not sure either man- just what I hear around here. I didn't do coilovers myself.

yea not sure what you're getting at here man, but stock SS's sit about 1" lower than base models from the factory. the easiest way to compare heights is to measure from the ground to the top of fender well in the center. i'm on coilovers all the way down with lock rings installed on 205/60/15 and if i remember correctly my front fender height is 24 1/4" and rear is 24 3/4" which is about 3.5" lower than stock all the way around, i don't need to go any lower and wheel gap is minimal. now since i'm a base model and don't have ground effects or the SS bumpers and side skirts it doesn't look that low. if you run custom coilovers and do other suspension work like RandyO and Fitz you can go even lower but anything under 24" fender heights and you can/will run into axle issues and axle bind. here's a pic of how my car sits for reference...

It will go just as low as a SS, just doesnt look as low because if the bumpers and side skirt. The ride height will be the same.
And if you're going very low get a powell rotated trans mount, and steering rack spacers.

DO NOT SLAM an auto trans base model, you will have **** axle bind and run through axles twice a year. Get B&G springs and call it a day.

I'm already on sportlines and there too much. I was told there transmission mounts for autos? Wouldn't that help

you're probably hearing about poly trans mounts which will do you no good, last time i heard Powell was still attempting to make a set of his rotated trans mounts for auto's but he didn't have a successful set as of yet.
