Under hard braking at high speed, the car can get a weird slow fish wiggle going on (similar to when those guys on the pro sportbike circuits are getting on the brakes before a turn). Right now, I'm under the assumption that it may have a bit too much front bias because of that. Somebody please chime in on that.
We would be looking at a minimum of a new caliper (duh), and a new bracket. This would make your e-brake bull though, BUT my shop has done an ebrake kit on a Rotora big brake kit for the Sky's, so I think we can get something like that together. Though it is added cost, it would be beneficial for daily driving (and sexy as all hell).

The fishy feeling the car gets could be a couple things. The most common would be too much front brake bias. It could also be the tires you are running. Are you on the stock conti's? Mine does it much less now that I have the Nitto NT05's.

Anyway, right now I am thinking that an EVO caliper will do wonders. But, I will talk to our head tech and see what he thinks about that caliper, or something else from Brembo.

Somehow I missed the update on this.

Yeah, the fishy movement was on stock Conti2s. I've since had Conti3s (less fish) and now RE960 AS Pole Positions (haven't tried yet).

Yeah, something as simple as a rear Evo caliper swap would be great. I'm not looking for a complete redo, but something just a little bit more substantial than what's currently there. Interested to see what you find.

this would seriously be looks only. Theres a reason the koni, time attack and grand am cobalt SS's run stock calipers in the back...and front.

With a diverter valve on it to put more braking force to the rear it would.

if it's a rotor or pad issue with compound it's 99% the pad is to aggressive for the rotor hence the excessive wear.. this was VERY common on the IRl's becuase the rotor's were wearing out just a lil bit faster then the pad's.. i could be wrong.. the solution was a ceramic pad and the stock rotor for the best life of pad/rotor.. and less dust all around..

Since we are talking about the problems we are having with the stock brakes...

ah never mind.

ok... a great deal of information in this thread is just completely retarded and pulled out of peoples asses

The whole problem with the rear brakes is not a debris cover!!!! Please think about this, for that to be the problem some sort of debris will have to end up in your wheel which is constantly moving at high rpm remember. Then this piece of debris will have to settle itself inbetween the pad and rotor(which are touching at all times).

Now please tell me what debris on the road is gonna jump up get into your caliper and settle itself inbetween your pad and rotor? Also what type of debris found on public roads is harder than iron? And by the astronomical odds of anything like that even happening, this is happening to almost every cobalt ss t/c?

I ask all who feel like they are obliged to repeat whatever they hear on the forum to please just stfu! you are the same people you are asking what bov is better for our cars! You are not in a position to be giving technical advice.

The deal with the whole brembo caliper in the rear is possible. An evo caliper retrofit would be the easiest from an evo 8. this brings up the problem of the e-brake which is in our stock caliper. We would need a seperate e-brake caliper which is also made by brembo. A machine shop with a 5 axis mill could easily fabricate a bracket that could support both of these calipers. the next thing needed is the lines which shouldn't be to hard. And i wouldn't be worrying about a dif caliper messing with the brake bias, considering a caliper is not what determines brake bias!

Won't be cheap considering not too many people would buy these

The caliper won't affect the brake bias, but we could put a diverter in to change it. I was just saying that the caliper will let us change the bias to have more in the rear.

The reason the rear brakes wear the way they do...is because there is no rear brake disc debris cover. Debris from the road gets on the pad, you step on the brakes, there you go.

Someone PLEASE sticky this?

You might think it is ******* rocket science.

All FWD cars will wiggle the tail when braking hard on track, unless you have aero. Man up, and be quick with your hands.

It's more of a confidence issue. Unless you do something dumb, it should not swap ends. You can't add much more rear bias, because there's not enough weight back there. The way you hit the brakes also makes a difference. If you just stomp on the brakes, and don't give enough time for the weight to transfer, it'll wag even more. And take advantage of any opportunity to brake uphill.

agreed, my rotors get hot enough to GLOW, it is not an issue with calipers, you need to find the right pad/rotor combination.

xr1s in the front with stock rotors and r1 concepts smooth face in the rear with hps+ pads work great for me. They don't last very long, but damn.

DO NOT add more rear brake bias, you will be sorry I promise you.

pff 99% of the people on this forum only want new calipers in the back because it will have a name of a company on them, "brembo".

lulz.

If youre burning through rear brake pads on street tires then you need better pads, not a different caliper.

There is zero reason any remotely street legal Cobalt I have ever sen or heard of needs quick change rear brake pads.

People want custom spec'd rear brake kits but wont buy $160 brake pads......something wrong here and it ain't anything to do with our cars.
