Broken Studs...Again

so for the third time, the studs on for my wheels broke. first the FL, then FR, and now the RR. idk what's going on, or why they keep breaking off. cans someone please shed some light as to why this keeps happening. i have 17' Konig Unknowns and 205/40 tires if that helps. maybe im using the wrong lugs? thats about the only possibility i can think of right now other than low quality gm parts. somebody help me!

Haven't heard of someone breaking their lugs yet... You're not torquing the lug nuts to much are you or what exactly is happening at the time of it breaking?

My guess is you are over torquing the lugs. At least wheel studs are cheap to replace.

If you race the car or if you hit curbs etc. that can break wheel studs. If you drive spirited (turning >20mph) and the side forces are too great, you can break wheel studs. Also your aftermarket wheels and springs can cause wheel studs to break by increasing the force on them somehow. I bet if you go back to stock (get an alignment after install) springs and wheels and torque them properly, you will never break another stud again from normal driving.

I never heard of anyone breaking wheel studs on their Cobalt before. That would be very rare, must be something unique with your car. A lot of people race, hit curbs etc. and I have not heard anyone complain about the wheel studs breaking.

How are your tires wearing?

Invest in a torque wrench/replace all the stock lugs with aftermarket.

That's strange because its a VERY common problem for Cobalts with aftermarket wheels.

This...I think youre only supposed to torque them to like 100lbs. Seems low but that's what's recommended. I've broke 2 before I started torquing them to 100. None since then.

again...it's very common. just not talked about since it's such an easy fix that everyone can do. search for broken wheel stud and you'll see.

They are easy to strip as well if you buy cheap aftermarket lugs.

Heres the question:

Are the wheels hub centric??

The Cobalts wheel studs are no different than any other car. It doesn't happen with stock wheels, so common sense should tell you its something with your aftermarket wheels.

Amazing how quick people on here are to blame the CAR instead of their AFTERMARKET PARTS.

In 90% of the cases it's from overtorquing. If he doesn't have hubcentric rings then that's definitely not helping. The Cobalt studs do seem to be rather weak in comparison to other cars. I've never had a problem with cranking studs half past hard as **** except with this car.

Not all wheels need the rings.
