I know nothing about suspensions but did you ever notice it before messing with the suspension? It could be the fuel system. It makes that tapping noise at low speeds and has no correlation with bumps. Most people notice it shortly after they turn the car on or off, or cruising at low speeds up to a stop light. If that's what it is it is completely normal. It will clunk two or three times in a row, almost like you've got a midget in your trunk. If that's not what it is, I'm not much help.

I did the sportline/koni swap too, only thing I didn't do was the sway bar. Like the other guy said check your shock bolts. Also might be your swaybar mounts or something along that line.

Great, that explains the smell.

check the top strut nut. it could be that, or the spring settling when going around turns, or the spring being lifted off its perch when going over bumps. like they said, a number of things.

I don't want to hijack this thread but what all of you guys, and maybe even cpraider12 are experiencing is the fuel system working normally. Check out this thread for more info: https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/problems-service-maintenance-69/bang-trunk-57577/

Also, here is the tech bulletin (i stole it from the thread):

Document ID# 1890375
2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subject: Noise from Rear Of Vehicle - keywords canister cold CVS click evap knock L61 LE5 noise rear solenoid tick vent #PIC4317B - (01/23/2007)

Models: 2006-2007 Saturn ION

2006-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt

2007 Pontiac G5

2005-2007 Pontiac Pursuit

with Engine RPO L61 or LE5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This PI is being superseded to update technical information. Please discard PIC4317A.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:
A noise may be heard from the rear of vehicle; typically 3-5 knocks during initial cold start. The noise may sound like someone outside of the vehicle is tapping on the back window or on the rear exterior body panels.

Recommendation/Instructions:
This noise is from the vehicle's EVAP canister vent solenoid going through the diagnostic cleaning cycle, which is part of the software calibration set-up. Replacing the EVAP canister may not resolve the issue when the vehicle is re-exposed to a cold start. No parts should be replaced. This should be considered a normal condition for 2007 and previous model years.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

ehhh... I just took a look at it... which was tough, because first I had to ask my ricer friend what an exhaust was... and it looked like that would only be possible if it had a loose mount... it still has a pretty good amount of a distance, where I doubt it would come in contact with the arm.

I'm going to go with the midgets with hammers in the rear wheel well...

I get that "tapping" too, although it never sounds like it's coming from outside to me. Definitely sounds like it's coming from somewhere inside/under the vehicle in the back. It's kind of cool to know that it's a self-checking mechanism and not just the springs settling or something like that.

I never get it on start-up or cruising around either. It's always probably 5-7 full seconds after I shut it off.

And mine doesn't sound like just three single taps. It sounds like two quick double-taps (where the first is a little lower pitch than the second) followed by a single tap (the lower pitched one again). Does that accurately describe anyone else's sound?

Exactly x2. - thats why I always thought it was a brake issue. But of course the never found anything.
