Cool Replacement Rotors
Cool Replacement Rotors
I was thinking about upgrading my brakes but didnt want to do a whole kit and just want them to look alittle better. Are there any replacement drilled or slotted rotors that will go in place of my stock rotors and accept the stock calipers?
88rotors or 2daybrakes
I bought mine on ebay. 4 slotted/cross drilled rotors with pads for $184.99 shipped. These were silver coated and not zinc coated. I later found a set of 4 with pads that were zinc coated for like 10 bucks less. Zinc coating prevents rust.
Also, paint your calipers. I'll post a picture later.

Well, I've had slotted and crossdrilled rotors in the past and the spread the heat out so evenly and force air throught he holes so well that they last a LONG time! I had them on my cavalier for 2 pad changes and they said they didn't need resurfacing or replacing!
I've only had these on the Balt since Saturday afternoon. And the pads were tough to put on cause they put so much damn pad on there! But that's a good thing, they'll last a long time!
But so far, they still look shiny and the stopping power is a definate improvement!
I'm impressed!
Since my car is silver, I went with the silver/blue theme. But I used RED on my calipers to really set it off! Don't buy the spray, buy the stuff you brush on, it comes out as a gloss red. Looks HOTT!

Blanks. Don't get drilled or slotted rotors. They're a waste of money, and those stupid holes are just there for connecting the dots, with cracks... Slots can work if designed for the right purpose and pad, but more than likely, you're just wasting money cutting your pads faster.

Thats what im thinking, can some one point in the direction of some rotors that are direct replacements tho?
I just bought new rotora rotors and ebc green stuff pads off of ebay for mine (2.2 4 lug) but i see a lot of people order brakes like the ones here :

where do u get that brush on caliper paint at?

autozone or pepboys should have this^^
So this 'drilled' rotor is marketed for performance and keeping rotors cool etc etc, when in actuality the metallurgic properties will just result in micro fractures turning into major fractures with time and heat.
Audi's and other vehicles which come stock "drilled" aren't drilled at all, but the molding process actually incorporates the holes so that the metallurgic structure of the rotor isn't compromised.
Buy these drilled rotors if they make you feel they'll impress the kids at your sons high school, but know that they will break down sooner, crack, and possibly result in brake failure. You can inspect "drilled" rotors to see if they've been drilled or molded, I've never sought non OEM drilled rotors. Perhaps a company molds rotors with holes, but the price will get astronomically more expensive at that point.
Very true. However the rotors crack if they are drilled because all vendors drill rotors after the rotor is fabricated. This makes the metal weakened in this area, and it cracks through the supporting ribs in the center rotor assembly, thus resulting in a rotor that could crack in half.

Interesting, I never thought about that... you bring up a good point I suppose.
Honestly though, unless you're track racing at high speeds, drilled and slotted rotors are only for looks. OEM rotors are just fine. You only get the full benifits for slotted and drilled if you are stopping from a high speed. And if you need that in daily driving, then you are a moron.
UPDATE, well, it's been a month and I'd like to say, I really like these rotors and pads I got from 88rotors/2daybrakes (Ebay). A little squeaky at times but nothing a can of DeSqueak can't fix! Stopping from fast distances is incredible! Not a lot of dust from the pads at all, eventhough they are ceramic.
Since I got the SILVER instead of the ZINC, they started to rust after a few washes, so sanded down the hub, primered and painted it with HIGH HEAT silver and they look fantastic! Still shiny!

This seems to be a pretty polarizing subject on most of the forums I have been on. Not all OEM drilled rotors are molded with the holes. Some are drilled later, and I have seen OEM rotors with spider cracks. A major point to look at is if the holes are chamfered. When the holes are just drilled through, there is a very sharp edge, which from a metal standpoint, is considered a stress riser. If you chamfer the holes, you reduce this possibility.
I bought the eBay cross-drilled and slotted rotors for my wife's G6 (my G5 soon). She had destroyed the factory rotors in a very short amount of time. So far, these have held up much better. In traffic, the braking is more consistent, and feels much more solid. I would buy them again for sure.
