how many miles did you have on your car before you replaced the brakes?

 

40k on an SS/SC, might go a while longer on a 2.2. Normal window is usually 30-60k for brakes. And having drums on yours, your rear brakes should last SIGNIFICANTLY longer than disc brakes.

 

Mileage is not a good indicator so much as driving style and conditions. If you do a lot of highway driving and not very much driving in "stop & go" traffic, then your brakes will last considerably longer because you hardly ever use them, but if you drive in a lot of traffic then they will wear out very quickly. Brakes are a wear item. The more you use them, the faster they wear. There is no set mileage to them.

True and yet not so true. There's no reason for brakes to last less than 30,000 miles other than a) manufacturer defect or b) ABUSE. I drive in HEAVY stop and go traffic. I also put 7 auto-x events and 200 miles of road course racing in the 40,000 I had my stock ones.

The reason there's a "range" in acceptable mileage is driving conditions:

30,000 - probably a daily commuter to a decent sized city, lots of stop and go traffic, lots of braking and/or a heavy foot on the brake pedal.

60,000 - most likely either a "special occasion" car or a car that's mainly driven on the open highway with not much braking and/or someone who is very light on the brakes.

Or, in other words, a car whose brakes are not used often or extremely can go twice as long between brake changes as a car who is daily driven in heavy traffic or whose driver likes to be heavy on the brakes. In some cases, people may fall just short of 30k or go over 60k, but in my experience with cars those numbers are almost dead on for expected life.

had the car for 2 years now. Every time I go for an oil change I ask them to check the breaks. They still say they are ok. I just don't want them to say all of the sudden I need new rotors too!!!!!!!! I think I'll just change them anyway before the summertime.

im at 27k and i know they are starting to wear down.. but i will say mine are good for atleast another solid 10k... i also do about 50/50 highway/city driving in..

you also gotta remember how you break.. long drawn out breaking is just as bad as heavy breaking...

 

24.4k on my car, and my brakes/rotors just like, instantly went bad.

the rotors were warped, and because they were warped, they screwed my brakes due to the uneven surface.....GM says its not under warranty since warping rotors are common after 17k miles.....which is why they have a 15k warranty on rotors.

 

Most dealerships have a brake warrentty only to 15,000 miles, where I work tis 12/18,000

Yes there is a such thing as a brake warrenty, But it is very rarly seen.
