Inform me about the SS/SC

I will be getting an SS/SC when I get back in the country in July/August and was curious about some things with the suspension.

I've noticed that there are not many options right now (read: really nothing) and was just curious as to what the main things were that need to be improved on. I have plans to possibly road race or auto-x the car later on and was just interested in what needs to be done.

I figured larger brakes and rotors, sway bars, springs and shocks (the best possible; maybe coilover - not sure), and how about the control arms? Figured would need motor mounts, transmission mount, strut tower, and torque brace of some sort.

Not saying all of this stuff at once, just curious. Enlighten me.

DICK^^^^

the SS/SC has a pretty dam good and some what stiff stock set up.

there are a few drop kits that'll help out with geting things stiffer and help cut down what little body roll the car has and were working on geting soembody to make some sway bars for our cars...i dont think there out yet.

and there are poly engine/trans moutns also front strut bar by a few differant people and Torque forward makes an AWESOME rear tie bar.

if you want to get in to JBP has a great set of coil overs but there $$$$$$

hope that helps.

jbodyperformance has you covered as far as poly control arm bushings, engine/tranny mounts and an expensive coil over kit. ssbc makes a big brake kit, but the stock calipers should be fine, just upgrade the rotors and pads. stillen makes rotors for our car but they're pricey. i picked up a set of four powerslot rotors for what 2 front stillens woulda cost me. ingalls makes a really good tq brace as far as i know, and dc makes a strut bar.

also, make sure if you're going to autox you get the performance package. it comes with recaro seats and a quaife lsd for 1500 bucks. half what you would spend just to get an aftermarket lsd put in, so it's a good idea.

Go with suspension first if auto-x/road racing is what you want to do. Brakes are more than adequate stock. I would suggest steel lines, but that's about it. Better pads, but the rotors are fine for track use. The race-prepared Cobalts use the same rotors as stock only with different pads. No good adjustable sway bars yet, but good thinks should be coming from Hotchkis. There are fixed sways from Progress right now, but again, if you're serious about track/auto-x I'd highly recommend waiting for the adjustables. For the time being, I have a rear support bar that seems to be working well as well as a strut tower brace in the front.

There are NO good springs/shocks out for track use. DO NOT go with lowering springs. Wait for coilovers. There are a few out already, but nothing that's going to be sufficient for a road course. Koni Yellows are supposed to be in the works. Ohlins has supplied coilovers for the Grand-Am Cup Cobalts, so I would assume they will have a production kit out, though I have not seen one yet. Basically wait on something good. The ones out now are way too much money for way too little functionality.

Right now I have nothing in the way of torque braces/tranny mounts/etc. I'm thinking an engine torque dampener, maybe a tranny mount, and some control arm bushings. I would do one at a time, so you get a feel for exactly what each one does to the car.

All that being said, I ran my car both auto-x and road racing when all it had was a strut bar. It did excellent. It's VERY competitive on an auto-x course and let's just say there were some very shocked and disappointed people at the road course. The car is quick and handles well for a front wheel drive.

I will say this: DO NOT BUY THIS CAR UNLESS YOU GET THE G85 PERFORMANCE PACKAGE. For what you want to do, you must must MUST get the package with the LSD to get the most out of the car. I drive mine without it, which for the first season was a nightmare. But I've since learned the car and how to control it, so not having the LSD is not really an issue for me, but eventually it is going to need one to make it perform up to it's full potential.

DO NOT go with the JBP coilovers if you're serious about getting into auto-x and/or road racing. You will find that you need more adjustability than just ride height and they're overpriced for the limited adjustability.

also as for the ss/sc with the slim mods that I have. After learning how to drive it I can routinely take all mustang gt'd up to 2003 stock or very lightly modded. This was just proven this weekend. Now I am going to see if I can take the new body style GT's.

Lol I gladly admit that an srt4 with whoop on me. Everytime I see one I just assume Im inferrior.

Back on topic, get the G85. It will probably end up costing you more than just 1500, always does. But IMO its worth it. I love the Recaros. Not a lot of suspension upgrades out yet, but give it time.

Maybe look into the competition steering knuckles offered by GM. There was a Cobalt autocrossing when I went and broke their LF steering knuckle. Judging from that, they would be worth it.
