Need some help- sideways like
Need some help- sideways like
HI! this is my first post here. As you can see, the name says it all: I just got my hands on a Cobalt LS. I didn't have the $$ to spring for the SS version, and it definently sucks. So on that note...
I've been told that tuning a LS for speed is wasted effort, so instead of going fast, I wanna go sideways. Can anyone help me setup my '06 LS for drifting?
I heard so far to:
get smaller back wheels, get new rods, get new coils, increase HP and torque.
Is that all I can do? Can anyone add to or elaborate on these ideas?
thanx in advance

A few points about drifting
1) you have got to be RWD to be competitive, period.
2) It is not a good sport for a daily driver. Its an extremely abusive sport on a drivetrain and tires. Professional teams can go through several pairs of tires a day.
3) Better idea would be to keep the cobalt as a nice daily driver, and buy an old rwd nissan or mustang or camaro and make it into a drifter. So if someting breaks, no problem!!

Trying to drift with a FWD car = RETARDED

because everyhting they told me to add onto it (with the exception of tossing in some horsepower and torque) deals with the suspension. and that's the first thing that's going to get shot out.
as for rods and coils, i was curious as to why they'd suggest that, but hell, figured i'd put it down anyway.
so the best thing to do is go shoot myself in the foot for buying the LS, and go get something RWD. okay

But if you bought it for a drift car, then you basically chose the worst possible car.
An LS is in no way, shape, or form a drift car.... but that has already been reiterated several times. An LS is, however, a great, reliable daily driver that will get you some good gas mileage.
Go find yourself a beat up 240sx for $1,000-2,000 and drift it until it breaks. Then you can swap the engine and do other things on a reasonable budget. (expect $5k to $8k for a good 240 drift car)

an RB swap would be a horrible idea. hard, expensive, and less aftermarket support. RB swap would be for a 240 enthusiast that has some money to burn and a desire to be different.
drifting is not going to be cheap though... so maybe not your "sport"
