I have a steel bar that runs accross the back of the engine compartment
from one strut tower to the other.

Or some call them a strut brace too but its all the same

 

op i believe you need to read some books, start simple like the chiltons ricer manuals, "how to modify your sport compact car" and titles like that, and then work your way up, your learn alot from those "lame" books if your a total noob

 

Seriously you learn alot from honda/nissan/toyota/vdub guys too...

 

There is a book called "Car hacks and mods for dummies". I have it in my library and its a good bathroom reader.

 

There are also a number of very informative websites that can guide you in setting-up your car -- handling, braking, horsepower, tires, driving skills, etc.
