Stock struts are perfectly fine. Not sure why your are calling them crap. If you are looking for comfort go with stock...

Koni are easily the best of the off-the-shelf options. Better than FE5 struts, but you'll pay more than FE5. If performance matters, get Konis. If you want to save money, get some stock FE5. GM probably pays about $10 a strut, so let that be your judge.

The Konis have low friction and wear reducing parts, which is why they offer a lifetime warranty for the original buyer. Plus they are valved considerably better.

This man speaks the truth.
However if your not looking for performance then just get a good brand replacement strut (not autozone garbage).

However Ive had good luck with KYB GR-2s on 2 of the vehicles Ive owned and they've heldup to some good abuse and lasted a good while. So I will be soon swapping over to the KYB GR2/Excel G's on my cobalt. I just hope they didnt make a 1 size fits all strut for the cobalt. Hoping they have replacements for FE1/FE3/and FE5 not just 1 strut for all of them....
